About this file
This document contains questions and answers regarding ultrasonic testing requirements for a Payload Handling System solicitation. The solicitation by the Department of the Navy Naval Supply Systems Command seeks the development of a Payload Handling System in accordance with the attached documentation. One question addresses whether ultrasonic testing can be performed prior to heat treatment, to which the response recommends addressing the sequencing of ultrasonic testing in the fabrication plan after contract award, as cracks can be missed if testing is done too early before heat treatment and quenching. Details on intended machining and manufacturing process steps will be provided in the first article and forging sketches.

Question: Is it acceptable to perform the UT testing prior to heat treatment?
Answer: There are many cases where UT prior to final heat treatment is acceptable; however if done too early cracks can be missed that propagated during the heat treatment and subsequent quench. The first article and forging sketches will provide detail on the level of machining intended to be performed on the part and at what step in the manufacturing process the machining is accomplished. It is recommend that sequencing of the UT be addressed in the Fabrication Plan after contract award.
