Will hand placement with a power screed be acceptable?
GOVERNMENT RESPONSE: Acceptability of hand placement with power screeds will be evaluated per task order basis.
25. Specification Section 32 13 13.06 and Section 32 13 14.13, Section 2.1.3.2 and 2.3.1.2 respectfully, Alkali Silica Reactivity is calling for the testing of the fine and coarse aggregate separately, using ASTM C1260. Reject individual aggregates with test results that indicate an expansion greater than 0.08 percent after 28 days of immersion in 1N NaOH solution, or perform additional testing as follows: utilize the proposed low alkali Portland cement, blended cement, and SCM, or Lithium Nitrate in combination with each individual aggregate. If only SCMs are being evaluated, with or without SCMs are being evaluated, test an expansion greater than 0.08.
The local sand deposit can have problems achieving this requirement.
Concerning ASR and testing of the aggregates, evaluate the fine and coarse aggregate separately, using ASTM C1260. Reject individual aggregates with test results that indicate an expansion of greater than 0.08 percent after 28 days of immersion in 1N NaOH solution. If only SCMs are being evaluated, test in accordance with ASTM C1567. If Lithium Nitrate is being evaluated, with or without SCMs, test in accordance with COE CRD-D 662. Determine the quantity that meets all the requirements of these specifications and that lowers the expansion equal to or less than 0.08 percent after 28 days of immersion in a 1N NaOH solution. Base the mixture proportioning on the highest percentage of SCM required to mitigate ASR-reactivity.
The local sand used in the cement mix has a problem meeting the 0.08 requirement. This material has been shown to exceed the 0.1 percent requirement in ASTM C1260. Can the ASR value be changed to match the requirements in Specification Section 03 30 00, Section 2.5.2.1 Alkali-Aggregate Reaction?
GOVERNMENT RESPONSE: The maximum ASR expansion allowed for aggregates for concrete paving, covered under Section 32 13 13.06 and Section 32 13 14.13, will remain at 0.08% at 28 days. Concrete structural elements under Section 03 30 00 are typically not exposed to the elements the same way a concrete pavement is; hence the lower requirement.
