About this file
This is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) document addressing contractor inquiries regarding zinc plating specifications for HY-80 steel parts.
The material specification is HY-80 per NAVSEA TM T9074-BD-GIB-010/0300, with a Brinell hardness of 200-260 HB and Rockwell hardness (HRC) of 15-26. Parts must be cleaned, prepped, and zinc plated per ASTM B633-13, Type II, SC-3 with a yellow chromate finish. Plating shall cover all surfaces except within the spline and keyway areas; however, plating is permitted in internal diameter and keyway dimensions provided that critical dimensions are maintained within specified tolerances. A reference drawing indicating areas that should not be plated has been posted in the SAM notice and is available for contractor review.

Q&A
Question #1:
• Can you please provide Material of part, the RC Hardness, marked up photos of areas requiring masking or full print showing dimensions and surfaces in which masking is to be applied?
Answer:
• The material is HY-80 per spec NAVSEA TM T9074-BD-GIB-010/0300 (which superseded MIL- S-16216). The Brinell hardness is 200-260 HB.
• The parts shall be plated everywhere except within the spline & keyway. See attached for what should NOT be plated.
• The attached drawing is posted in the SAM notice and labeled as what not to plate
Question #2:
Masking / Plating Scope Clarification
The SOW states:
“The Contractor shall clean/prep parts and zinc plate all over … except Spline, inside DIA and Keyway dimensions shall be maintained.”
Could you please confirm whether this requirement implies that:
The spline and internal diameters/keyways are to be masked or otherwise protected from zinc plating, or
Plating is permitted in these areas provided that critical dimensions are maintained within tolerance?
Answer:
Plating is permitted in those areas as long as the dimensions are maintained.
Question #3:
Finish / Color Requirement
Under ASTM B633-13, Type II, SC-3, could you please confirm the required finish/color (e.g., clear/blue, yellow chromate, etc.) expected by the Government?
Answer:
Required finish/color should be yellow chromate.
Question #4:
What is the base material and the HRC for it?
Answer: HRC is 15-26, base metal is HY-80
