5.0 NOTES:
5.1 The contractor and all subcontractors, regardless of tier must consult the General Technical Requirements (GTR) to determine applicability to this work item. In performance of this work item, the contractor and all subcontractors must comply with all applicable GTR’s including but not limited to GTR’s 1 through 7 and 24.
5.2 The contractor and all subcontractors regardless of their tier are advised to review other work items under this contract, to determine their effect on the work required under this work item. Many of the definitions relating to performance of this work item are found in Work Item 0001.
5.3 All dirt, debris, and liquids resulting from this work shall be removed from the ship daily and all areas involved left clean.
5.4 This work item and report should be conducted with WI 0918.
6.0 QUALITY ASSURANCE REQUIREMENTS: Refer to item 0004
7.0 STATEMENT OF WORK:
7.1 Arrangement/Outfitting:
7.1.1 Blade seal area must be taped off and or covered prior to polishing as to not cause damage to the seal.
7.2 Structural: None
7.3 Mechanical/Fluid:
7.3.1. Visually inspect the propeller(s) prior to cleaning or polishing. Complete and submit a propeller inspection visual report that includes, a minimum, the information shown in Enclosure 1 for both pressure and suction faces of all blades. Use Standard Navy Fouling Ratings (FR) as given in Enclosure 2.
7.3.2. Clean entire propeller, including hub, fillets, and blades, free of surface fouling, using sanding discs or high pressure water. Use of grinding or abrasive stones for cleaning or polishing the propeller(s) is NOT permitted. Care should be taken to minimize loss of propeller material. Sanding disc marks should lie in the direction of water flow (see Enclosure 3).
7.3.3. Complete and submit a propeller inspection Surface Roughness Report (Enclosure 4) indicating the after cleaning and before polishing roughness of all blades, both pressure and suction faces.
7.3.4. Perform a dye penetrant inspection on at least a three-inch band of the leading and trailing edges, both pressure and suction faces, of each blade of each propeller. Also, perform a dye penetrant inspection on all fillet areas. Submit a report that clearly identifies the location and size of all indications and includes a record of the hub stamping.
7.3.5. After completion of all propeller repairs, polish the propeller(s) using “Scotch Brite" 3-M surface conditioning discs, or equal. Use of grinding or abrasive stones for cleaning or polishing the propeller(s) is NOT permitted. Polish the pressure and suction surfaces of each blade tip between 0.7 and 1.0 radius to an equivalent of Rupert "A" (approx. 26 micro inch Ra.). Polish the leading edge (approx. 20% of the blade width, on the pressure and suction faces) of each blade to an equivalent of Rupert "A". Polish the remainder of the propeller to at least an equivalent to Rupert "B" (approx. 76 micro inches Ra.). See Enclosure (5). Either a tactile comparison gauges (Rupert) or an electronic profilmeter (micro inch) must be used to determine surface roughness.
7.3.6. Prepare and submit a Propeller Inspection: Surface Roughness Report (Enclosure 4) stating final blade surface finish for all the blades, both suction and pressure faces. At least ten readings are to be taken for each blade surface using either a tactile comparison gauge (Rupert) or electronic profile meter (micro inch). The readings should be 0.7 and 0.9, taken as follows: three at each radius of 0.3, and one at the tip. Take clearance readings on the blade palms as directed by the CPP technical representative. If repairs/replacement are made; contractor must submit to the MSCREP enclosure 6 properly filled out and a detail report when necessary on condition and repairs must be entered on the reverse side of the enclosure.
7.3.7. Completely cover the propeller during the entire dry dock period to protect surface from paint spray and damage.
7.4 Electrical: None.
7.5 Electronics: None.
7.6 Preparation of Drawings: None.
7.7 Inspection/Test
7.7.1. Notify the MSC Representative in accordance with Item 0004.
7.7.2. The MSCREP and OEM Tech Rep will inspect seal area covering prior to work commencement.
7.7.3. The MSC Representative will witness the roughness measurements. Areas of the propeller not meeting the requirements of Paragraph 7.3.3 must be re-polished.
7.8 Painting: None
7.9 Marking: None
7.10 Manufacturer's Representative: None
8.0 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS: None additional.
