About this file
This document is a presentation by Orr Partners and the Navy Museum Development Foundation (NMDF) detailing the project plan for developing the new National Museum of the United States Navy (NMUSN) adjacent to the Navy Yard. The project involves a multi-phase approach with three primary focus areas: design, construction, and coordination. For the design phase, NMDF will issue a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to select a Museum Building Designer, evaluating firms based on museum design experience, collaboration abilities, NAVFAC building requirements, team strength, and conceptual ideas. The selection process will involve creating a shortlist, issuing an RFP, and conducting interviews to choose the final designer.
The construction phase will use a Design-Bid-Build delivery method, with a General Contractor hired during the design phase to provide pre-construction services like cost estimating, constructability consultation, and exhibit design coordination. Comprehensive project coordination will involve multiple stakeholders and systems, including the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC), NAVFAC, security, exhibit designers, IT systems, furniture, code/fire alarm, and parking. The project aims to develop a new national museum through a structured, collaborative approach involving private sector expertise and naval organizational coordination.
