Lead, chromium, arsenic and cadmium have been identified in the structure and artifacts. All artifacts and architectural features will need remediation and packed in archival enclosures to ensure they are safe for transport and long-term storage. Rehousing of all items will need to be in accordance with museum standards and take into consideration current industry standards for protection from accidental exposure to these hazardous materials. The hut and associated artifacts are currently located at the National Museum of the U.S. Navy (NMUSN), building 76 at the Washington Navy Yard (WNY). Transport of all remediated and packed structural elements and artifacts to the Collections Management Facility (CMF) at the Defense Supply Center Richmond (DSCR) in Richmond, VA will be the responsibility of the contractor.

CU’s intent is to gain a detailed documentation of the structures’ disassembly via written instructions, drawings, photographs and a 3-D scan prior to remediation and packing. Although the artifact will go into long-term storage, the contractor shall plan for the possibility that, at some point in the future, the artifact may be re-assembled and put back on display to the public.

Contractor shall provide all labor, materials, and equipment to complete the project. NHHC shall approve work plans prior to the start of any work at WNY.

Work plan should outline the sequence of removal of artifacts and architectural elements, contingency plans, projected tools, and possible emergency stabilization procedures prior to beginning work. Work plan will be approved by CU and NMUSN prior to the start of any work.

Task 2: Prepare Work Area

Identify and construct a safe work zone for the remediation process. Work area should be clearly defined and labeled appropriately.

Byrd Hut and additional work area should be completely contained for hazmat remediation, disassembly, and packing of architectural elements and artifacts. The area should be sealed off from other museum spaces.

Task 4: Documentation and 3-D Scanning Document the Byrd Hut using a three-dimensional scan after initial remediation and prior to dismantling. Scan should include exterior and interior features detailing the current modes and methods of the current hut assembly.

Scanning of the Byrd Hut should be accompanied by drawings, written and photographic documentation throughout the disassembly of the hut.

Artifacts and interior furniture, bunks and shelving should be documented using photos, drawings, and written notes.

Changes to the condition of the artifacts and/or architectural features from those recorded in February 2023 should also be documented during the de-installation and remediation process.
