DISTRIBUTION STATEMENT A: Approved for public release: distribution unlimited

• A high performing technical organization recognized as a world class innovator for the characterization and analysis of underwater acoustic signatures required for advanced ships and ship systems, and for providing technical solutions that keep our Fleet at sea.

• A learning environment focused on developing the scientists and engineers and accelerating the knowledge transfer required to perpetuate the Navy's underwater acoustic stealth advantage.

• A culture of affordability dedicated to the utilization of common measurement systems and processes to cost effectively provide direct Fleet support.

• Innovative data products support the acquisition and engineering maintenance communities and the operational fleet, serving as an agent of integration between signatures design, implementation, operation and maintenance.

What We Do

• Test Submarines and Surface Ships for noise

– Quantify the level of noise

– Isolate the source of the noise

– Provide recommendations on reducing the noise

• Sponsored by NAVSEA to Operate Facility and Conduct

Tests

• Unique tests

– NOAA

– National Park Service

– Coast Guard

– Academic and Commercial support

When We Do It

• Test Every Submarine in the Pacific Fleet at the radiated measurement facility

- About every 4 years – Usually after a major refit

- ~ 9-15 Tests per year

- 10 personnel onboard, 19 personnel on shore for each test

- Schedule Flexible

Southeast Alaska Acoustic Measurement Facility

• $40M Development Cost 1992

• SEAFAC measures the signatures of Pacific Fleet submarines.

– Located in the deep, quiet, and protected waters of the western Behm Canal, a glacial fjord near Ketchikan, AK.

– Initial Operational Capability in 1991.

– Shore complex and two test sites.

• SEAFAC measures submarines under dynamic and static conditions.

• SEAFAC conducts, on average, 12 trials per year.

– Over 200 acoustic trials to date.

– Over 111 static site event to date.
