About this file

This document is a State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) review letter from the Ohio History Connection addressed to Jonathan Sorg, Wildlife Federal Aid Coordinator at the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. The letter concerns a proposed demolition of a cabin within the Mohican Wildlife Area, located near 31478 Township Rd 364 in Walhonding, Coshocton County, Ohio. The SHPO reviewed the project on December 17, 2024, in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and determined that the proposed work will not affect historic properties.

The SHPO's review indicates that due to previous site disturbances, the project has little to no potential to impact significant archaeological deposits. According to their records, no historic properties, districts, above-ground resources, or previously recorded archaeological sites are documented within the direct Area of Potential Effects (APE). No further coordination is required unless the project scope changes or archaeological resources are discovered during construction, in which case the SHPO should be contacted. The letter is dated January 29, 2025, and includes the RPR Serial No: 1106252.

RE: SHPO Report_ Wildlife District [4], [Mohican] W. A. [Mohican Cabin] Demolition Near 31478 Township Rd 364, Walhonding, OH 43843

Dear Mr. Sorg:

This letter is in response to the correspondence received on December 17, 2024, regarding the above-mentioned project in Coshocton County, Ohio. We appreciate the opportunity to comment on this project. The comments of the Ohio State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) are submitted in accordance with the provisions of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended (54 U.S.C. 306108 [36 CFR 800]).

The ODNR proposes the demolition of a cabin within the Mohican Wildlife Area. The SHPO agrees that the proposed work will not affect historic properties. Given the previous disturbances, it is our opinion that this project has little to no potential to impact significant archaeological deposits. According to our records, no historic properties, districts, above-ground resources, or previously recorded archaeological sites are documented within the direct APE.

Therefore, no further coordination is required for this project unless the scope of work changes or archaeological resources are discovered during the course of the project. In such a situation, this office should be contacted as required by 36 CFR § 800.13. If you have any questions, please contact me at arosenow@ohiohistory.org. Thank you for your cooperation.

Sincerely, Abigail Rosenow Project Reviews Manager – Architecture Resource Protection and Review State Historic Preservation Office

“Please be advised that this is a Section 106 decision. This review decision may not extend to other SHPO programs.”
