About this file

This is a technical specification document for high-density compact shelving mechanical components required for the State of Maine's Department of Revenue and Value Services (DRVS) office move. The specification details the complete mechanical system for mobile shelving units, including rail assemblies, carriages, wheels, bearings, drive mechanisms, and safety features. The rails are constructed of 3/4" x 1" SAE 1020 cold rolled steel set in extruded aluminum sub-rails, supplied in 10' and 12' sections respectively. Carriages are rated for 1000 lbs per linear foot load capacity and constructed of 12 gauge steel channel reinforced with cross members. The system includes 5" diameter high-grade steel wheels with double flanges mounted on permanently sealed ball bearings rated at 3,125 pounds each. Drive mechanisms utilize chain and sprocket systems with a crank handle to facilitate manual operation, and the system incorporates a pin-lock safety mechanism requiring manual activation before personnel enter opened aisles. The specification also provides for optional dual access configurations with crank handles at both ends of ranges.

Installation requirements specify that sub-rails must be leveled to a 3/32" maximum variation within a module and 1/16" maximum variation between adjacent rails, then anchored to the structural concrete floor using anchor screws spaced at three-foot intervals. Anti-tip safety channels integrated into the sub-rails prevent ranges from riding off rails or tipping. The specification provides options for either concrete topping or plywood flooring between the rails to fill gaps between the supporting floor and rail tops. All drive shafts, wheel axles, chains, and sprockets are specified with precise dimensions and material standards, including SAE 1020 and SAE 1045 cold rolled steel components. All bearings are self-aligning, hermetically sealed, and lifetime lubricated designs, with bushings explicitly prohibited. The document does not include information regarding quantities needed, pricing, bid due dates, or contract award terms.

HIGH DENSITY COMPACT SHELVING (MECHANICAL)

RAILS ( TRACK ) DESCRIPTION

The number of rails and their spacing shall be defined by dimensions of the module and by it's storage capacity. The rails shall be designed to allow no movement or deflection during operation of mobile ranges. Each rail assembly shall be made of 3/4" X 1" SAE

1020 cold rolled steel rail set in a sub-rail of extruded aluminium treated to withstand oxidation caused by concrete. The overall height of the rail assembly shall be one ( 1 ) inch, excluding grout. Rails shall be supplied in 10' sections and sub-rail shall be supplied in 12' sections. Sub-rails shall be of interlocking design to provide continuity between track sections. Sub-rails shall be designed with two grooves to insure adherence to a continuous grout bed preventing any lateral movement. Sub-rails shall be equipped with a rim on both sides to accommodate a 5/8” plywood floor and it’s covering, when needed.

INSTALLATION

Sub-rails shall be located and shimmed to bring levelness of the rails to a 3/32" maximum variation from true level within a module and 1/16" maximum variation between adjacent rails, (perpendicular to rail direction). Parallelism between rails shall be assured by the use of a specially design jig. When proper levelness is achieved, sub-rails shall be fixed to structural concrete floor by anchoring screws with a three foot spacing between each anchor. Anchor screws can be backed out for adjustment. Grout shall be applied under the sub-rail in order to assure continuous support.

ANTI-TIP REQUIREMENTS

Anti-tip shall be provided for stable and safe operation of equipment. A channel fastened under the mobile carriage shall run into the channel integrated to the sub-rail in order to provide a positive interlocking. The sub-rail with integrated anti-tip shall be anchored to the structural concrete floor . These channels shall prevent the range from riding off the rails and/or prevent the carriage from tipping. The quantity of floor anti-tip and anchoring shall be provided to suit the system design requirements and the local Building code.

CONCRETE FLOOR

A concrete topping shall be poured between the rails in order to fill the gap between the supporting floor and top of the rails. (N.I.C.)

FALSE FLOOR ( WOOD )

A plywood floor can be supplied between the rails in order to fill the gap between the supporting floor and top of the rails. ( Tiles or Carpet covering not included.)

CARRIAGES

Carriages shall be rated for a load capacity of 1000 lbs per linear foot. Each carriage is made of sections connected on both sides by coupling plates assembled with 8 steel bolts and vibration proof nuts and reinforced with cross members to achieve perfect carriage alignment. Carriage frames shall be made of 12 gauge channel, 5" x 1-1/2" SAE-1020 cold rolled steel channel reinforced with cross members. There shall be no permanent deflection or slippage in connected joints when exposed to forces encountered in normal operating circumstances.

Fixed carriages shall be of similar design and appearance to the mobile carriages in order to provide uniform shelving heights. Carriage frames shall be securely fastened to the structural concrete floor. The height of the fixed or mobile carriage shall be 5 9/16" above the surface of the rails. Standard rubber bumpers shall extend 1/2" from face of carriage to protect material which may extend beyond shelf faces, and provide a positive stop for all mobile carriages.

WHEELS & BEARINGS

All wheels of the Mobilex carriage are 5" diameter high-grade steel (SAE 1045). They are double flanged to insure proper guidance to carriage. All inside and outside flanged surfaces and edges shall exhibit no casting irregularities, chipped edges, or variations in flange profile or thickness. Their contact surface is spherically machined for lower friction. All wheels are mounted on permanently sealed ball-bearings and are rated at

3125 pounds.

DRIVE SHAFTS & WHEEL AXLES

All wheels on one side of each mobile carriage shall be driven by a common tubular drive shaft of 1.315" o.d. and 1" i.d. . Wheels shall be mounted on 1" diameter solid steel axles. All splices in drive shafts and all connections between drive shafts and wheels shall be by means of securely retained key-way couplings and bolts to guarantee a positive fit between drive wheels and wheel axles . Complete drive shaft and wheel assemblies shall be designed to insure no play or looseness over the entire length of any range. Wheels shall be securely restrained from sliding on axles or drive shafts by steel set collars. All bearings shall be of self-aligning, hermetically sealed, lifetime lubricated design. Bushings shall not be used.

DRIVE MECHANISM

Drive mechanism consists of a crank wheel linked by a chain and sprocket to the coupling shaft, itself linked through the medium of a chain and sprocket to the drive shaft.

Reduction ratio shall be provided to minimize the effort required on the crank handle to move a range. Recommended ratio shall be dictated by the total weight of ranges.

CRANK HANDLE

Crank handle shall consists of three steel prongs mounted to an aluminum hub. Swiveling knobs facilitate utilization of the handle. The hub by means of two self aligning, hermetically sealed, lifetime lubricated ball bearings shall be attached to the coupling shaft.

COUPLING SHAFT

The coupling shaft, located in the carriage, transfers torque (power) from the crank handle to the driving shaft. The coupling shaft shall be made of solid cold rolled steel.

DRIVE CHAINS

All chains shall be # 35 with 3/8” pitch.

SPROCKETS

All sprockets shall be one piece construction machined from cold rolled steel.

SAFETY MECHANISM ( PIN LOCK TYPE)

Safety system shall consists of a locking device located on the handle, which shall be manually activated by the user. The carriages located on each side of the opened aisle shall be locked by the user before going into the aisle to insure his safety. Then the carriages will not move without deactivating the locking mechanism manually.

DUAL ACCESS ( OPTIONAL )

This option shall be used when access to the module from both ends is desired. This shall be accomplish by providing a crank handle at each end of a range.
