MIL-DTL-2845E(SH) - Detail Specification Summary

This document is a Military Detail Specification (MIL-DTL-2845E) issued by the Naval Sea Systems Command establishing requirements for cleaning, drying, preservation, packing, marking, and storage of naval propulsion system components. The specification covers main propulsion shafting, line shaft bearings, stern tube and strut bearings, boat and ship propellers, propeller devices including controllable pitch propellers, and associated repair parts, tools, and thrust bearings. The specification is effective 18 August 1999 and supersedes MIL-P-2845D(SH) from 17 June 1991.

The specification establishes two levels of preservation protection: Level A (military-grade maximum protection for worldwide shipment and long-term outdoor storage) and Commercial (standard retail/wholesale packaging practices per ASTM D 3951). Preservation requirements include cleaning with specified solvents, application of preservatives per MIL-PRF-16173 grades 1-5 or VV-L-800 depending on material type and surface exposure, and wrapping with barrier materials per MIL-B-121. Packing requirements specify wood and plywood containers per PPP-B specifications, crate construction per MIL-C-104, and multiple-trip container preservation per AWPA standards. Propellers require specialized treatment including strippable coating per MIL-C-6799 (three-coat system with black, gray, and white), blade edge guards for propellers over 60 inches, and certification forms in waterproof bags. Shafting requires galvanized steel or wood lagging covering with corrosion-resistant bands, flange protection, and skid-based packing with specific member sizing tables. All items require specific stenciled markings per MIL-STD-129/MIL-HDBK-129 including serial numbers, stock numbers, preservation level, ship class, condition codes, and handling warnings. First article inspection is required when specified, with conformance sampling per ANSI Z1.4 at inspection level I for defects related to packing and marking. The specification includes detailed figures showing propeller shipping frames, edge guards, packing configurations for various propeller sizes, shafting assemblies, and gauge containers, with specific construction dimensions and material specifications referenced throughout.
