About this file

This is a technical specification document from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MI DNR) for an elevated boardwalk construction project at Sanilac Historic State Park in Caseville, MI. The specifications call for a fully engineered clear span boardwalk constructed of either Aluminum or Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP), spanning 54-56 feet with a 4-foot width. The structure must be designed with modular components weighing no more than 150 pounds each for remote site transport. The manufacturer must have at least five years of experience and provide references for five similar projects that have been in service for at least three years. The project requires professional engineering oversight licensed in Michigan, with designs accounting for specific load requirements including 60psf live load, 25psf wind load, and 35psf snow load.

The specifications detail material requirements, with decking to be provided and installed by the owner, and hardware connections to be aluminum or hot-dipped galvanized steel. The manufacturer must provide a 10-year warranty on structural integrity, materials, design, and workmanship. The owner is responsible for site preparation, foundation design, soil testing, and unloading/placement of the boardwalk. The manufacturer must submit detailed drawings and calculations within 15 calendar days of purchase order issuance, all signed and sealed by a Michigan-licensed Professional Engineer or Architect.
