About this file
This document is a response to questions related to a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U) Storage Ring "Hard Bend" (HBEND) Magnets.
The key details are:
- The supplier requested confirmation on an alternative approach to manufacturing the vertical PM blocks, which involved producing sample blocks, measuring their magnetic properties, and using that data to determine the production block height. LBNL confirmed this approach is acceptable.
- The supplier also proposed splitting the central vertical blocks into two glued pieces, with the cut perpendicular to the magnetized direction, to ensure uniform magnetic properties. LBNL confirmed this modification is also acceptable. The related federal contract opportunity is for the procurement of the ALS-U HBEND magnets, with a solicitation number of MG-09272024. The RFP was released on 09/27/2024, with proposals due on 10/28/2024. The contracting agency is the Department of Energy.

LBNL Response to Questions 02 Re: LBNL RFP MG-09272024 – 10/30/2024
1. In reviewing the technical specification document AL-165-4599A, specifically section 3.1.2, there is a requirement for vertical PM blocks to be measured and then machined according to the results of the magnetic measurements. This would require that blocks are magnetized, measured, and then demagnetized for machining.
This procedure can be challenging since magnets will still have some residual magnetization after they are demagnetized by coil, this will make precision machining and coating of the blocks extremely challenging;
unless magnets are put in a high temperature which shall be over curie temperature for a couple of hours, this will be close to 300˚C, however, this could bring additional risks, just like rust, a potential decrease of the remanence, etc.
As an alternative, can the supplier make tests on the sample and then machine raw un-magnetized blocks for production? For example: 4 sample blocks are made for tests. One block is used to make the measurement cylinder for the BH curve measurement. The rest of the test blocks would be magnetized and measured with Helmholtz coil and Hall probe mapper.
All the measurements would be supplied to LBNL to determine the production height of the vertical PM blocks.
Could you please confirm if this approach would be acceptable?
LBNL Response: Yes. The approach to manufacture 4 sample blocks for magnetization measurements to determine the vertical PM block height is acceptable to LBNL.
2. After further evaluation of the vertical PM block with dimensions of 70.65x43.05x74.37mm it was concluded that there is a need to make it from 2pcs glued blocks. The cut will need to be perpendicular to the magnetized direction in the middle of the block. This will guarantee the best uniform magnetic properties.
Could you please confirm if this would be acceptable?
LBNL Response: The recommendation to split the central vertical blocks is acceptable to LBNL for the HBEND production.
