About this file

This document is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) response to LBNL RFQ MG-08102026 dated August 20, 2026, addressing supplier inquiries regarding manufacturing requirements and material specifications.

The RFQ involves the fabrication of permanent magnet assemblies and associated components. LBNL clarified that 3D CAD models in STEP AP242 format will be provided upon contract award. Regarding permanent magnet manufacturing, LBNL confirmed that no subcontracting is permitted for primary magnet manufacturing processes (pressing, sintering, machining, grinding, and magnetizing), magnet measurements, or final assembly and bonding operations. The awarded vendor must demonstrate prior experience with grain boundary diffusion processes to enhance intrinsic coercivity and must provide evidence of experience with epoxy-bonded permanent magnet assemblies, including detailed information on epoxy bonding strength. LBNL rejected the proposal to source magnets from specialty vendors such as EPI Magnets, reiterating that the primary vendor must manufacture the magnets in-house. For materials, LBNL approved the substitution of 5083 Cast Tool & Jig Plate (Alca 5, ATP 5) in place of Aluminum 5083-O sheet to address concerns about warping and tolerance hold-up during machining operations.

LBNL Response to Question 01 Re: LBNL RFQ MG-08102026 – 08/20/2026

1. Will 3D CAD models, such as STEP AP242 (.stp) files, be available for the components to support the manufacturing process?

LBNL Response: These files will be made available upon award

2. We have not yet identified a qualified supplier for the specified magnets. Does Berkeley Lab have an approved source, previously used supplier, or manufacturer part number that you can share?

LBNL Response: No. These cannot be subcontracted to another vendor, as stated in SOW section 2.1 - Manufacturing Requirements:

1. The primary manufacturing of the permanent magnets (i.e., pressing, sintering, machining and grinding, magnetizing) cannot be subcontracted to another vendor.

2. The measurements required on the permanent magnets cannot be subcontracted to another vendor.

3. Fabrication of permanent magnets with grain boundary diffusion processes, to enhance the intrinsic coercivity near the magnet surface, is required. The vendor must have and provide evidence demonstrating experience with this process to LBNL ahead of any potential award.

1. The final assembly (bonding) of the permanent magnets cannot be subcontracted to another vendor. The vendor must have demonstrated experience with epoxy-bonded permanent magnet assemblies and provide information to LBNL ahead of any potential award on the epoxy to be used (including bonding strength).

3. Given that the Aluminum 5083-O sheet has a lot of internal stress, it's going to warp after machining. Because of that, the supplier won't be able to hold the 0.02mm (.00078”) thickness tolerance. Can the supplier quote 5083 Cast Tool & Jig Plate (Alca 5, ATP 5) instead? It's much more stable and will let hit your tolerances without an issue.

LBNL Response: Yes. 5083 Cast Tool & Jig Plate is acceptable.

4. In the SOW, under manufacturing requirements, it is stated that “The primary manufacturing of the permanent magnets (i.e., pressing, sintering, machining and grinding, magnetizing) cannot be subcontracted to another vendor”. If a supplier plans on ordering the permanent magnet from a vendor specialized in magnets called “EPI Magnets,” would that be allowed? It is unlikely that a company that specializes in magnets would manufacture & build other assemblies such as the ones you are requesting, so I wanted some clarification.

LBNL Response: This is not allowed as specified in the requirement that the primary vendor must manufacture the permanent magnets.
