About this file

This is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) document for LBNL RFQ MG-07142026, issued on July 21, 2026. The document addresses six vendor inquiries regarding material specifications, sourcing, design documentation, and project budgeting for a manufacturing contract.

The RFQ requires vendors to manufacture parts using ASTM A801 Type 1 (UNS R30005) base material, with demonstrated prior experience in machining, hydrogen atmosphere heat treating, and magnetic characterization of this specific alloy. LBNL identified EFINEA Metals and Vulcan Metal Group as known suppliers of the required UNS R30005 material. The procurement will not provide raw materials to vendors; suppliers must source and procure materials independently. Engineering drawings are available for bid preparation, with CAD/STEP files to be provided upon contract award. LBNL declined to disclose target budget or estimated project value at the time of this Q&A response. The document does not specify response deadlines, award dates, or pricing terms.

LBNL Response to Questions 02 Re: LBNL RFQ MG-07142026 – 07/21/2026

1. Is the specified material typically this expensive?

LBNL Response: LBNL does not have current pricing information for the required materials

2. Would LBNL be open to considering an alternate material that meets the required specifications?

LBNL Response: LBNL requires all parts to be manufactured using base material that meets the ASTM A801 Type 1 (UNS R30005) standard.

As a reminder, per Technical Requirement 1 in the RFQ, prospective vendors must provide examples of prior experience machining, heat treating in a hydrogen atmosphere, and magnetically characterizing this material.

3. If LBNL has an approved or recommended source for this material, it would greatly appreciate it if this information could be shared.

LBNL Response: EFINEA Metals and Vulcan Metal Group are known suppliers of UNS R30005 alloy.

4. Given the high cost of this raw material, would LBNL consider providing the material to suppliers for machining?

LBNL Response: No. LBNL will not provide the raw material to manufacture these parts.

5. Is a CAD/.STEP file available for this part, or is the provided engineering drawing the only design document?

LBNL Response: CAD files will be provided at award

6. Is there a target budget or estimated project value??

LBNL Response: This information will not be disclosed at this time.
