About this file

This is a concept summary document for a multi-use trail project prepared by Barge Design Solutions for the City of Johns Creek, Georgia. The project proposes extending a multi-use trail along Medlock Bridge Road/SR 141 from the Chattahoochee River to Bobby Jones Road to address the city's need for improved pedestrian and bicycle movements. The document presents two design alternatives: a west side trail and an east side trail, both featuring 10-foot-wide paved multi-use paths. The west side alternative involves meanders through residential parcels to avoid utilities, requires two gravity walls (45 feet and 65 feet long) to accommodate existing neighborhood structures, and would necessitate guardrail modifications at the Chattahoochee River approach. The east side alternative runs more directly parallel to the road and requires relocation of approximately 710 linear feet of existing brick walls currently fronting neighborhood properties. The project meets standard pedestrian and bicycle warrants and will likely require an Encroachment Permit for Large On-System Projects from GDOT.

The probable construction cost for the west side trail is $1,026,888.29, while the east side trail is estimated at $1,767,439.67, both including 10 percent contingencies. The west side alternative requires right-of-way acquisition of 0.32 acres across 11 parcels with 1.88 acres of temporary easement, while the east side impacts seven parcels with 0.70 acres required right-of-way and 0.74 acres temporary easement. Utility coordination will be necessary with multiple providers, with the most significant impacts to Sawnee EMC Power Distribution requiring relocation of three poles on the west side and eleven poles on the east side. Environmental considerations include potential tree clearing impacts on tricolor bat habitat. No design variances from GDOT are anticipated, and public involvement will be determined by the City of Johns Creek.

Project Description

This project proposes the extension of a multi-use trail along Medlock Bridge Road/SR 141, from Bobby Jones Drive to the Chattahoochee River. The project provides design recommendations to meet the City of Johns Creek’s need for improved pedestrian and bicycle movements along the East or West shoulder of Medlock Bridge Road.

Concept Discussion

This concept includes two layouts, one showing the multi-use trail along the west side of Medlock Bridge Road/SR 141, and another showing the trail along the east side of Medlock Bridge Road/SR 141. An opinion of probable construction cost for each layout is included as generated from AASHTOWare.

Medlock Bridge Road/SR 141 West Side Trail This layout includes a 10 ft. wide multi-use trail along the west side of Medlock Bridge Rd. that starts immediately after the approach guardrail from the bridge over the Chattahoochee River terminates. The trail connects to the existing 9 ft. paved shoulder at this location. The guardrail cannot be removed to provide a trail connection to the bridge shoulder due to the impact concern of the bridge end within the clear zone. To extended the trail to the bridge, without removing guardrail, the guardrail would be moved behind the trail before flaring back to connect with the bridge. Providing the flare using GDOT standards would extend the guardrail and shorten the trail even more. A rework of the existing driveways and drainage structures would need to occur, which would be costly.

The trail meanders along residential parcels 2,3, and 4 to avoid various utilities. The trail then runs parallel to the road until parcel 11. There the trail follows the existing elevation, using a proposed grade of 25% or less within the buffer. The trail terminates at Bobby Jones Rd, connecting via restriped crosswalks to the proposed multi-use trail from Bobby Jones to Old Alabama Rd.

Two sections of the trail come in conflict with existing structures from the neighborhoods lining Medlock Bridge Rd. Outside of the Thornhill neighborhood, before Chelsen Wood Dr., there is a brick wall which impedes upon the cut slope needed to tie the low elevated multi-use trail to existing ground. To avoid having to move the brick wall, a 45 ft. long, roughly 1.5 ft. tall gravity wall is proposed to hold back the existing ground in front of the brick wall.

The other structure the trail interferes with is a water feature in front of the Prestwick neighborhood, after the intersection with Prestwick Club Dr. The proposed multi-use trail is above the existing ground, and the fill slope to tie back into the ground would interfere with the feature.

To preserve this feature, a 65 ft. long gravity wall is proposed to hold roughly 2.5 ft. tall fill in front of the water feature. A handrail will be installed above both walls.

This layout of the trail comes to an end at the bridge over the Chattahoochee River. A solution to get pedestrians across to the East side will be needed to access features and parks South of the Bridge.

Barge Project #3851702

Page - 4

Medlock Bridge Road/SR 141 East Side Trail This layout consists of a 10 ft. wide multi-use trail along the east side of Medlock Bridge Rd. that starts at the edge of the bridge over the Chattahoochee River, connecting with the existing 9 ft.

paved shoulder.

The trail runs parallel to the existing road until parcel seven, where it begins to meander to avoid various utilities. The trail then returns to following the existing road until it terminates at Bobby Jones Rd. It connects to the proposed multi-use trail on the northwest side of the intersection via crosswalks that will be restriped to 10 ft wide.

The east side trail impacts two brick walls located in front of neighborhoods, requiring that these walls be relocated. The first wall is between Vista Bluff Dr. and River Trace Dr. A portion of this wall is currently warped and will need to be replaced regardless of the trail impacts. Roughly 465 ft of this wall is proposed to be removed and relocated behind the existing right-of-way lines. The second wall is located between River Trace Dr. and the Atlanta Athletic Club driveway. Roughly 245 ft of this wall is proposed to be relocated behind the existing right-of-way line.

Project Information

Functional Classifications and Speed Design

Medlock Bridge Road/SR 141 is classified as an urban principal arterial with a design speed of 45 mph.

Bicycle and Pedestrian Warrants

Standard Pedestrian Warrants 1 and 2 are met. Residential areas. Curb and gutter is included as part of the urban border areas.

Standard Bicycle Warrants 2 and 3 are met. Medlock Bridge Road / SR 141 has an existing shared lane and residential neighborhoods, commercial centers, and schools are located close to or on the project.

Design Variances

No Design Variances from GDOT are expected to be needed for this project.

Design Concerns/Limitations An “Encroachment Permit for Large On-System Projects” will likely be needed from GDOT as described in Chapter 11 of GDOT’s “Regulations for Driveway and Encroachment Control.”

Environmental Proposed tree clearing may require consideration for tricolor bats.

Public involvement to be determined by City of Johns Creek.
