Summary
This is a Material Specification and Track Geometry document for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Widett Layover Facility project, detailing the procurement and delivery requirements for 136RE head-hardened railroad running rail under Contract No. F60PS01. The project requires the furnishing and delivery of 15,000 linear feet (LF) of 136RE rail to 100 Widett Circle, Boston, MA 02118 by September 2, 2027. The 136RE rail must meet MBTA Material Specification No. 9633-A and be manufactured to head-hardened specifications with a minimum Brinell Hardness of 285 BHN. Short rails ranging from 30 to 38 feet in length will be accepted up to nine percent (9%) of the total quantity. The supplier is responsible for quality control and testing at the point of manufacture, coordinating freight and transport, providing all relevant certifications and shipping manifests at least ten business days prior to delivery, and ensuring transport vehicles are properly equipped for safe unloading. Materials will remain at the manufacturer's risk until accepted by the Authority, with rejected materials to be returned and replaced at the manufacturer's expense within one month.
The specification also addresses the continuous welded rail (CWR) fabrication work, including electric flash butt welding requirements, quality control procedures, and inspection standards. The General Contractor will be responsible for coordinating transfer and delivery of materials, handling and storage at the project site, and inspection and approval of delivered materials. Prior to manufacture, the supplier must submit complete shop drawings for each item. The 136RE rail is warranted for one year after installation to repair or replace defective materials or workmanship. All costs associated with furnishing materials, labor, transportation, handling, and storage are to be included in the Contract Unit Price payment item 0290.991P for 136RE Rail, measured in linear feet with FOB delivery terms to the project site.
