About this file
This document contains questions and answers regarding Request for Quotation M6700424Q0039 for a laser cutting machine. The solicitation seeks a fiber optic laser that can cut materials within a tolerance of 0.078 inches. An assist gas is required to blow molten metal out of the cut kerf. The Marine Corps Logistics Base in Barstow, California will unload and connect the machine, and make all utility connections. Training on operations and maintenance must be provided on site by the vendor, who will also be responsible for installation. No dust collection system is needed outside the building.

Q&A for RFQ M6700424Q0039
1. Fiber Optic laser with ability to cut + - 0.078”/2mm of material listed below.
Is this an indication of the accuracy for the machine? Like =/- 2 mm for the location and for the dimensions?
A. All the material listed has dimensions. As an example, the machine needs to be able to cut 1.0” (25mm) +- .078/2mm. So, if it can cut 27mm and 23mm is acceptable.
2. Gas generation system must be included.
It is not clear what this refers to in a laser system? The fiber laser does not need gas to operate. Please advise what is this requirement.
A. All fiber lasers need an assist gas. It is used to blow molten metal out of the kerf
(narrow space created by the width of the beam), to avoid it solidifying along the sides of the cut. The assist gas for fiber lasers is almost exclusively nitrogen, but oxygen or compressed air are also used.
3. The request states that a gas generation system is required. Please specify:
• What is the flow rate in SCF per day required?
Whatever the machine requires to operate.
• What gas are you requiring generation for?
Whatever the machine requires to operate.
• To what percentage of purity will the system need to generate this gas?
Whatever the machine requires to operate.
• How much “generated” gas storage capacity will you require?
Whatever the machine requires to operate.
• Must the Gas Generator be allocated in the machine footprint specified? (L45’ x W22’ x H10’) No, this can be in another area close to the Laser.
4. The request states that installation must be included by the manufacturer/vendor
• Will the government be unloading the equipment from the delivery truck and rigging it into place on the shop floor? Yes, MDMC PEM/MHE will do the rigging and placement of the machine.
• To clarify, will the government make the 480V connections and compressed air connections as required to the machine? Yes, MDMC PEM will make all connection to the machine.
5. Will dust collection be required to be routed outside of the building?
• If it has to be outside, how far away is it to the outside of the building. Can you provide a shop floor layout drawing with these details included?
Does not need to be outside.
6. Operation and Maintenance Training must be included. On site or off site.
Does this mean that the vendor is expected to provide training on operations and maintenance?
Yes
7. Installation must be included by the manufacturer/vendor.
Does this mean that the vendor will also be responsible for installation?
Yes
