About this file

This document contains a Q&A file and a federal contract opportunity solicitation for a laser cutting machine. The Marine Corps Logistics Command is seeking to procure one laser cutting machine with delivery to the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Barstow, California. The laser cutting machine must be able to cut materials within a tolerance of 0.078 inches or 2 millimeters of the listed dimensions. An assist gas is required to blow molten metal out of the kerf during cutting, with nitrogen being the most common gas used for fiber lasers. Questions regarding the RFQ solicitation will be accepted via email up to 72 hours after its posting.

Q&A for RFQ M6700424Q0039

1. Fiber Opc laser with ability to cut + - 0.078”/2mm of material listed below.

Is this an indication of the accuracy for the machine? Like =/- 2 mm for the location and for the dimensions?

A. All the material listed has dimensions. As an example, the machine needs to be able to cut 1.0”(25mm) +- .078/2mm. So, if it can cut 27mm and 23mm is acceptable.

2. Gas generaon system must be included.

It is not clear what this refers to in a laser system? The fiber laser does not need gas to operate. Please advise what is this requirement.

A. All fiber lasers need an assist gas. It is used to blow molten metal out of the kerf (narrow space created by the width of the beam), to avoid it solidifying along the sides of the cut. The assist gas for fiber lasers is almost exclusively nitrogen, but oxygen or compressed air are also used.
