About this file
This is a Plant Visit Report prepared by WestTech for the Paseo Real Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Santa Fe, New Mexico, documenting the condition of a 94-foot COPC2 Primary Clarifier No. 2 (west) inspected on May 24, 2026. The report, authored by Jess Kelley and prepared for plant superintendent LeRoy Alvarado, provides a comprehensive assessment of all clarifier components and actionable recommendations for maintenance and replacement. The inspection evaluated 15 distinct components of the clarifier system, including the drive assembly, center platform, bridge, launder trough, effluent weirs, rake arms, spiral rake blades, scum skimmer, scum box, cage, center column, energy dissipating inlet, feed well, and clarifier basin.
The findings reveal critical equipment failures requiring immediate attention and replacement. The drive assembly is beyond economical repair, with main bearing wear indicating imminent failure that could idle the entire drive system. Major components requiring complete replacement include the spiral rake blades with stainless steel squeegees, the scum skimmer mechanism with radial arm and supports, and the scum box with attached piping—all exhibiting extensive deep corrosion and structural damage. The rake arms require either full replacement or comprehensive rehabilitation including sandblasting and repainting. Components recommended for sandblasting and repainting include the cage, center column, energy dissipating inlet, and feed well. Several elements remain serviceable, including the center platform, bridge, launder trough, v-notch effluent weirs, and clarifier basin concrete. These recommendations align with the related Primary Clarifier #1 Rehabilitation Project contract opportunity, which addresses mechanical system replacement, electrical control panel replacement, and concrete/grout repairs for clarifiers installed in 1998 that have reached the end of their useful life.

PLANT VISIT NOTES
WEDNESDAY, MAY 24, 2026
1. DRIVE
OBSERVATIONS
The drive housing, the reducer attachments, the cage ear attachments, and the torque box plate are in good condition and show little corrosion. The original paint is mostly undamaged and in good condition. The stainless steel torque box is in good condition and the torque control switches are closing at the design torque levels.
The reducer assembly is leaning very badly to the side. This indicates that the lower pinion bearing and perhaps the upper pinion bearing as well, have disintegrated.
There is a gap between the lower edge of the main gear teeth and the plate to which the main gear/bearing is bolted. When the drive is new, this gap is 1/4 inch. As the drive ages and the main bearing wears, this gap narrows, and thus provides a good indication of the condition of the main bearing. This gap is now approximately 3/32 inch, or slightly less that 1/8 inch. This indicates that the case hardened surface of the bearing balls and the induction hardened surface of the bearing races are worn through and that main bearing is worn out. This means that the bearing is riding on unhardened steel and that the main bearing could fail at any time and thus idle the drive and put the clarifier out of commission.
RECOMMENDATIONS
I recommend that the drive be replaced altogether. Replacing the drive would be less expensive than reconditioning the drive to get it back to new condition.
2. CENTER PLATFORM
OBSERVATIONS
The center platform is in good condition. There is little or no corrosion and the original paint is intact and in good condition.
RECOMMENDATIONS
I recommend that the center platform be left as it is.
3. BRIDGE
The bridge is in good condition. There is little or no corrosion and the original paint is intact and in good condition.
RECOMMENDATIONS
I recommend that the bridge be left as it is.
4. LAUNDER TROUGH
OBSERVATIONS
The concrete of the launder trough is in good condition. There is no cracking and spalling of the surface is not deep.
RECOMMENDATIONS
I recommend that the launder trough be left as it is.
5. V-NOTCH EFFLUENT WEIRS & BAFFLES
OBSERVATIONS
The v-notch effluent weirs and inner baffles are made of fiber reinforced plastic (FRP). The mounting brackets and fasteners are stainless steel. The weirs and baffles are clean, show no UV deterioration from the sun, and are in good condition. The stainless steel mounting brackets and fasteners are in good condition.
RECOMMENDATIONS
I recommend that the FRP v-notch effluent weirs and inner baffles and the stainless steel mounting brackets and fasteners be left as they are.
6. ANTI-DENSITY-CURRENT “STAMFORD” BAFFLES
OBSERVATIONS
The anti-density-current or “Stamford” baffles are made of fiber reinforced plastic (FRP). The mounting brackets and fasteners are stainless steel. The baffles are clean, show no UV deterioration from the sun, and are in good condition. The stainless steel mounting brackets and fasteners are likewise in good condition.
RECOMMENDATIONS
I recommend that the FRP anti-density-current or “Stamford” baffles and the stainless steel mounting brackets and fasteners be left as they are.
7. RAKE ARMS
The rake arms show a great deal of corrosion and the original paint is worn or missing in many places. The corrosion of the main rake arm members and diagonal braces is not through and is not deep enough to jeopardize the structural integrity of the arms. The corrosion of the vertical posts and members which support the spiral rake blades, however, is deep and through in many places.
I recommend that the rake arms either be replaced entirely, or else repaired, sandblasted and repainted.
8. SPIRAL RAKE BLADES AND STAINLESS STEEL SQUEEGEES
The spiral rake blades show extensive, deep and through corrosion and the original paint is almost all badly damaged and missing. The stainless steel squeegees are bent and detached from the rake blades in places.
RECOMMENDATIONS
I recommend that the spiral rake blades and the stainless steel squeegees be replaced entirely.
9. SCUM SKIMMER
The scum skimmer mechanism, the long radial skimmer arm, and the skimmer supports show extensive deep corrosion and the original paint is badly damaged or missing. Parts of the skimmer mechanism are bent and damaged.
RECOMMENDATIONS
I recommend that the scum skimmer mechanism, the long radial skimmer arm, and the skimmer supports be replaced entirely.
10. SCUM BOX
The scum box, its supports, and its attached piping are badly corroded and the original paint is almost entirely missing.
RECOMMENDATIONS
I recommend that the scum box, its supports, and its attached piping be replaced entirely.
11. CAGE
The cage is in good condition. It shows extensive corrosion and the original paint is damaged and missing in many places, but the corrosion is not deep or through and the cage members are not distorted or otherwise damaged.
RECOMMENDATIONS
I recommend that the cage either be replaced or else sandblasted and repainted.
12. CENTER COLUMN
The center column is in good condition. The upper part of the column shows extensive corrosion and the original pain is worn over the entire length of the column, but the corrosion is thin. The base of the column and the bolts that attach it to the clarifier floor are in good condition.
RECOMMENDATIONS
I recommend that the center column be sandblasted and repainted.
13. ENERGY DISSIPATING INLET “EDI”
The energy dissipating inlet or EDI is in good condition. It shows extensive corrosion and the original pain is worn and absent in many places, but the corrosion is thin.
RECOMMENDATIONS
I recommend that the energy dissipating inlet or EDI be sandblasted and repainted.
14. FEED WELL
The feed well is in good condition. It shows extensive corrosion and the original pain is worn and absent in many places, but the corrosion is thin.
RECOMMENDATIONS
I recommend that the feed well be sandblasted and repainted.
15. CLARIFIER BASIN
OBSERVATIONS
The concrete of the clarifier basin appears to be in good condition. The concrete shows only shallow spalling and very little cracking and no heaving. I sounded out the floor in numerous locations and was unable to detect any separation between the floor grout and the underlying concrete.
I recommend that the clarifier basin be left as it is.
