About this file

This document is Appendix D for the Lompoc Regional Wastewater Reclamation Plant (LRWRP), specifically detailing the Alternative B - New Pumping Station for Replacement of Influent Pumps, prepared by Brown and Caldwell consulting engineers. The appendix includes detailed engineering drawings and technical specifications for a new influent pumping station, with a focus on vertical turbine solids-handling (VTSH) pumps manufactured by Fairbanks Morse and Patterson Pump Company. The technical documentation provides comprehensive design details, performance curves, installation requirements, and pump characteristics for a proposed 20-inch MPVT-720 pump with a design point of 5,250 US gallons per minute at 29 feet of head.

The pump specifications indicate a sophisticated solids-handling solution designed for wastewater treatment applications, with features including non-clogging impellers, ability to handle stringy materials, and a single-sump set-well design that can reduce construction costs by 40-70% compared to conventional wet-pit/dry-pit pump configurations. The technical documentation includes detailed performance evaluation data, showing pump efficiency across various flow rates, with the best efficiency point (BEP) at 87.7% efficiency. The pump is rated for a maximum power of 93.3 brake horsepower and can handle liquids at temperatures up to 150°F, with a 4.25-inch maximum sphere size and specific speed of 3,425, making it suitable for municipal wastewater treatment plant influent pumping requirements.

VTSH@ Vertical Turbine Solids-Handling Pumps

Fairbanks Morse Pump Corporation

Vertical Turbine Solids-Handling VTSH rage 1 01 L

Vertical Turbine Solids-Handling Pumps VTSH" Series

Capacities: 5000 to 30,000 GPM Heads: 10 to 1 10 feet

Applications ... Fairbanks Morse VTSH@ vertical turbine solids handling pumps have proven experience in pumping of solids, slurries, and sewage. These pump are specifically designed to pass solids, sludge, trash and long stringy materials. Only a r sinale-sumo set-well desian eliminates the need for additional dry-sump, suction pip&g, dehhrnidification and sump pumps, thereby dramatically reducing initial construction costs - a savings from 40 to 70 percent when compared with conventional wet-pitldry-pit designs.

VTSH@ pumps can be found in sewage and raw water lift stations, many unattended, which require utmost reliability and freedom from clogging and resistance to wear or other downtime maintenance. Plants demand pumps to provide sustained high performance, the best possible design to resist clogging, minimize wear, and minimum size driving motors and controls to reduce construction and operation

- costs. Sewage and wastewater treatment plants and industrial plants where solids handling service, sludge mixing, sludge re-circulation, return sludge, activated sludge, jet aeration, trickling filter, filter backwash, and primary and secondary effluent is required are typical installations. Other installations include river intake, plant influent and storm water pumping.

The VTSH@ is ideally suited for installation in the new Trench-Type Self-cleaning Wet Well design recently introduced.

The successful application of the Fairbanks Morse VTSH@ pumps requires the consideration of many elements. In addition to knowing the capacity and discharge head requirements, other factors which need to be evaluated include:

Net Positive Suction Head Available (NPSHA) and submergence Total pump thrust Maximum operating pressure Capacity operating range Horsepower required throughout the pump's operating range System head curve Sump requirements

Other considerations include:

Parameters of the liquid being pumped Allowable solid size Type of line shaft lubrication Type of line shaft sealing Elevation

-. Material of construction i ~eatures ... Parameters of Fairbanks Morse VTSH' pumps require the units to be available in configurations to meet user needs. Fairbanks Morse meets these demands by providing VTSHQ pumps in lo" , 16", 20", 24" and 30" nominal bowl diameters.

Impellers are of the non-clogging type designed with blunt, well-rounded leading vanes and thick hydrofoil shape to ensure passage of large solids and long stringy materials. VTSHQ pumps are substantially more efficient over a broad capacity range than conventional solids-handling pumps. The diffuser bowl design is such that there is no bearing below the impeller to obstruct flow into the impeller eye or on which trash could collect. The bowl is designed with two symmetrically arranged well- rounded diffuser vanes which serve to fully balance the radial hydraulic forces and eliminate the radial load of the impeller. Consequently, bending forces imposed on the shaft are virtually eliminated, resulting in long bearing life and a smooth, quiet operation.

Material of construction include cast iron bowls and impellers, and stainless steel pump shaft. Column is flanged and lineshaft is enclosed for water flushing and lubrication of bearings. The column contains a vertical splitter plate aligned with the vertical exits of the bowl vane to prevent trash from accumulating on the shaft enclosing tube.

VTSH@ pump design allows the entire drive system and controls to be located above the flood plane. Virtually any drive system: VHSNSS motors, variable-speed motors, wound-rotor motors, two-speed motors, magnetic and fluid

, couplings, steam turbines, engines, and combination electric and standby engines can be used.

Our special services ... at Fairbanks Morse we will design, research, test and manufacture VTSHO pumps for special requirements. In many cases our standard pumps can be easily modified to meet these special requirements.

\Our quality ... begins with total source control coupled with our investment in and commitment to highly specialized, computerized machinery. Fairbanks Morse manufactures VTSHO pumps that must meet the exacting standard of our design engineers.

Our commitment ... at Fairbanks Morse is based on our longevity, distinctive products, market leadership, and customer service and is the direct result of the quality and dedication of our personnel. Our VTSHQ pumps are machined, built, and tested by our skilled shop personnel who average over 23 years of experience. Working as a team, our people continually explore new ways to better serve our customers. Product quality, dependability, and innovation are all part of the Fairbanks Morse commitment to excellence.

A WORLD LEADER IN HEAVY DUTY PUMPING

Patterson MPVTB Multi-Purpose Vertical Turbine Pumps

The MPVTB is a truly superior, solids handling, municipal/industrial, multi-purpose vertical pump that takes the concept of vertical turbine pumping one step further by being specifically designed to handle stringy solids. An internal vane inside the pump column and discharge head prevents stringy material from wrapping around the shaft enclosing tube. This vane is aligned with one of the diffuser vanes to prevent build up of solids.

Patterson's more than a century of pumping success combines with the latest in design and engineering technology to produce a more efficient pump with the very highest hydraulic performance and lowest vibration and noise levels.

- No other pump on the market today can be as easily integrated into retrofit plans of existing submersible pump installations.
