About this file
This document is an agenda and presentation materials for NASA Langley Research Center's Industry Day, held September 22, 2026, focused on the NASA Langley Aerospace Innovation District (AID) Hub initiative.
The event convenes industry, academic, and regional partners to present NASA Langley's capabilities, real estate strategy, and partnership opportunities. NASA Langley operates a 764-acre facility with approximately 1,300 civil servants, 1,300 on-site contractors, and 300 students, with a FY26 budget of approximately $855 million. The center maintains six core competencies: Aerosciences, Structures & Materials, Entry/Descent/Landing, Intelligent Flight Systems, Systems Analysis, and Atmospheric Characterization. These capabilities support missions across three directorate areas: Human Spaceflight Mission Directorate, Research and Technology Mission Directorate, and Science Mission Directorate. The center operates world-class research facilities including multiple wind tunnels (14x22-Ft Subsonic, Transonic Dynamics, National Transonic Facility, and others), ground test facilities, simulators, flight capabilities, and computational tools including the Katherine Johnson Computational Research Facility.
NASA Langley's real estate strategy aims to attract major aerospace organizations to lease underdeveloped parcels and establish the facility as an integrating hub for the regional aerospace ecosystem. Parcels under consideration for initial Announcement for Proposals (AFP 1) include: Parcel 1 for a Lunar/Mars Surface Simulator, Parcel 1a for a historic park, Parcel 2 for renewable energy and BVLOS/waterway transportation, Parcel 4 for the NASA Langley Gateway (university consortium design/innovation space with makerspace, hotel, graduate housing), and Parcel 5 for payload processing. The Request for Interest (RFI) opened July 1, 2026, for one year. AFP 1 will issue in early January 2027, with an industry day aligned to Virginia Aerospace Days in February 2027, proposals due in June 2027, and selection determinations by September 2027. The initiative supports national priorities including a Hypersonics Center of Excellence Incubator and Other Governmental Agency partnerships, NASA missions including a Mid-Atlantic Aerospace RDT&E Integration Hub and Autonomous Systems Regional Hub, and Langley's institutional needs including the Langley Gateway and infrastructure development (renewable energy farms, data centers, hotel/housing).
