About this file

This document is a compliance matrix for the VC04 & VC12 Pumping Station project at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). The matrix details technical requirements and specifications that contractors must follow for manufacturing vacuum chambers, with "shall" statements indicating contractually binding requirements versus "may" or "should" statements indicating desired but non-binding specifications.

The document outlines specific requirements including documentation deliverables, manufacturing specifications, quality assurance protocols, and environmental standards. Key technical requirements include achieving a maximum thermal outgassing rate of 1.00e-11 Torr.l.s-1.cm-2, final pressure of 5.00e-10 Torr, and using CuCrZr material with hardness greater than HRB 70. Manufacturing processes must follow strict cleanliness protocols for ultra-high vacuum (UHV) environments, with specific standards for welding, cleaning, and testing procedures. The contractor must conduct visual inspections, CMM measurements, water pressure tests at 120 psi, bakeout procedures, and helium leak tests before final delivery. Special packaging and shipping requirements are specified to ensure proper protection during transport.

Will – is used to inform intent or declaration of purpose. This is not a specification. Example, the author will use the word ‘shall’ to indicate that a specification is contractually binding and must be implemented.

Specification definition

Shall, will, may, and should are used to define every specification listed in this document. The definitions of these terms are as follows :

May – is used to indicate a desire or goal of a specification. This can also be interpreted ‘as nice to have’ and are not contractually binding.

Shall –is a specification that is contractually binding and must be implemented.

Should – is used to indicate a desire or goal of a specification. This can also be interpreted ‘as nice to have’ and are not contractually binding
