About this file
This is an Insurance Requirements document for the State of Michigan. The document establishes mandatory insurance coverage that contractors must maintain throughout the duration of contract performance. Contractors are required to obtain a Certificate of Insurance and submit it with their bid submission. All insurance policies must be provided by companies with an A.M. Best rating of "A-" or better and a financial size category of VII or better. The State of Michigan and its associated departments, divisions, agencies, and personnel must be named as additional insureds on applicable policies.
The specific insurance requirements include Commercial General Liability with minimum limits of $1,000,000 per occurrence and $2,000,000 general aggregate; Automobile Liability with $1,000,000 per accident limits and Hired and Non-Owned Automobile coverage; Workers' Compensation coverage according to applicable laws with waiver of subrogation; and Employers Liability Insurance with minimum limits of $500,000 per accident and disease. Contractors are also responsible for Property Insurance covering all State property and personal property under their care, custody, and control up to replacement value. Claims-made coverage policies must include retroactive dates prior to contract commencement and maintain coverage for three years following project completion. Contractors must provide insurance certificates to the Contract Administrator at contract formation and within twenty calendar days of policy expiration dates, notify the administrator within five business days of any policy cancellations, and ensure all subcontractors maintain equivalent insurance coverage. Contractors waive all rights against the State for damages covered by insurance.
