About this file

This document specifies the Minimum Essential Characteristics (MECs) for a UV Laser Slide Printer that the Contractor shall provide to the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID).

The printer must meet 19 defined characteristics, including physical dimensions not exceeding 21 inches height by 16 inches width and depth, and a weight not exceeding 70 pounds. The equipment shall utilize UV laser-based engraving technology without ink or thermal transfer ribbons to produce permanent, solvent-resistant markings on standard 1 inch × 3 inch microscope slides with thicknesses between 0.9 mm and 1.2 mm. The printer must provide automated feeding and printing of multiple slides with a minimum load capacity of 100 slides per batch and a minimum print speed of 15 slides per minute. The device shall support standard 1D and 2D barcodes (Code 39, Code 128, Data Matrix) at a minimum resolution of 300 dpi, with printing confined to the slide end/label area. The printer must connect via USB and/or Ethernet, integrate with the Pristima Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), and include data management/label design software supporting customizable layouts. The equipment shall operate on standard 100–240 V AC, 50/60 Hz laboratory power under conditions of 59–86 °F and 20–80% relative humidity and comply with IEC/EN laser safety and electrical safety standards. The Contractor shall provide on-site start-up support, operator training, and comprehensive documentation. Delivery shall be coordinated with a Point of Contact to be determined at time of award and shipped to USAMRIID at 1425 Porter Street, Fort Detrick, MD 21702. All software licensing, warranty, and services shall follow Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) terms and conditions.

Minimum Essential Characteristics (MECs) UV Laser Slide Printer

The Contractor shall provide one (1) UV Laser Slide Printer meeting the following Minimum Essential Characteristics:

1. The printer table-top dimensions must not exceed: Height: 21in.; Width: 16 in.; Depth: 16 in.

2. The printer should utilize a UV laser-based engraving/printing system (no ink or thermal transfer ribbons) to ensure permanent, solvent-resistant slide identification.

3. The printer should at least be able to provide automated feeding and printing of multiple slides without continuous user intervention.

4. The printer should at least have a slide load capacity of at least 100 standard microscope slides per batch in an integrated magazine and/or hopper.

5. The printer ought to have a minimum print speed of 15 slides per minute.

6. The printer should support standard 1 in. × 3 in. (approximately 76 mm × 26 mm) microscope slides, including plain and frosted-end slides commonly used in histology and pathology laboratories.

7. The printer ought to accommodate slide thicknesses in the range of approximately 0.9 mm to 1.2 mm.

8. The printer should provide a minimum effective print/engraving resolution equivalent to at least 300 dpi for clear alphanumeric text and 1D/2D barcodes suitable for laboratory use.

9. The printer should at least support printing of common linear and 2D barcodes (e.g., Code 39, Code 128, Data Matrix) on the slide label area.

10. The printer should confine printing to the slide end/label area without encroaching into the specimen or staining area of the slide.

11. The printer should at least provide connectivity via at least one standard data interface (e.g., USB and/or Ethernet) for connection to a host computer and/or network.

12. The printer and its driver/software ought to be compatible with and capable of integration into the Pristima Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) environment for automated slide identification and tracking.

13. The data management/label design software supplied with the printer should allow creation and modification of layouts including text fields, barcodes, and identifiers to support laboratory-specific workflows.

14. The printed/engraved slide markings ought to be resistant to xylene, alcohols, and other commonly used histology reagents and processes (including routine staining and coverslipping).

15. The printer should at least operate on standard laboratory mains power (e.g., 100–240 V AC, 50/60 Hz) without requiring specialized electrical infrastructure.

16. The printer weight should not exceed 70 lb (approximately 32 kg) to allow safe placement on standard laboratory benches without special reinforcement.

17. The printer should be designed to operate reliably under typical laboratory environmental conditions (approximately 59–86 °F / 15–30 °C; 20–80% relative humidity, non-condensing).

18. The printer ought to comply with applicable laser safety and electrical safety standards for laboratory equipment (e.g., IEC/EN standards for laser products and medical electrical equipment).

19. The Contractor should at least provide on-site start-up support, basic operator training (on-site and/or remote), and documentation (user manuals and technical guides) for operation and routine maintenance.

All software licensing, warranty, and services associated with the equipment shall be in accordance with Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) terms and conditions.
