Statement of Work

1.0 Introduction

The contractor shall perform work as described in the Statement of Work (SOW).

2.0 Background

Training to gain sufficient competence in psychotherapy skills is particularly important to military psychiatrists who are often assigned to isolated duty stations as the sole mental health provider following their residency training. Full training in psychodynamic/psychoanalytic psychotherapy and cognitive processing therapy is a requirement to adequately teach and supervise psychiatry residents in psychotherapy. There are no NMCSD psychiatry faculty members credentialed to provide adequate instruction and supervision in psychodynamic/psychoanalytic psychotherapy and cognitive processing therapy.

However, there are independent private practice psychiatrists and clinical psychologists in the San Diego civilian community, who do have full psychodynamic/psychoanalytic and cognitive processing therapy training to effectively teach and supervise psychiatry residents in these required therapy skills.

This training must be done in person, through a significant portion of the year, which would negate the possibility of traveling for anyone who is not local. Group consultations and instruction cannot be conducted online due to the requirement for participants to practice skills that they are learning throughout the academic year, and that is only feasible by using an in-person format.

3.0 Scope of Work

Candidates are required to be either; an ABPN or AOA certified psychiatrist; or an ABPP or AACP certified clinical psychologist; and to also have full training in psychodynamic/psychoanalytic psychotherapy and/or cognitive processing therapy; and must submit a Curriculum Vitae supporting these training requirements. The candidate will provide postgraduate year (PGY) 4 psychiatry residents formal in-person instruction, supervision and consultations relating to the residents’ psychotherapy patient cases; in a group setting composed of 7 or 8 (PGY) 4 residents; for one hour, once a week (for up to 48 sessions per year); in cognitive processing therapy, and psychodynamic/psychoanalytic psychotherapy, to include the integration of psychoanalytical concepts in case formulation; and the development of awareness and technical approaches to transference and counter transferences with patients.

4.0 Hours of Services

One hour group consultations with 7 or 8 PGY4 psychiatry residents, held once a week, up to 48 sessions per year.

5.0 Task Description:

Supervision, consultations and instruction in psychodynamic/psychoanalytic psychotherapy and cognitive processing therapy via in-person group consultations; in the San Diego area; to include the integration of psychoanalytical concepts in case formulation; the development of awareness and technical approaches to transference and counter transferences with patients.
