About this file

This Statement of Work (SOW) details a requirement for psychodynamic/psychoanalytic psychotherapy supervision and instruction for postgraduate year (PGY) 4 psychiatry residents at Naval Medical Center San Diego. The primary objective is to provide in-person group consultations to address the lack of credentialed faculty members who can effectively teach and supervise psychiatry residents in psychotherapy skills. The contract requires one-hour group consultations with 7-8 PGY4 psychiatry residents, held once a week, for up to 48 sessions per year, focusing on integrating psychoanalytical concepts in case formulation and developing technical approaches to transference and counter-transferences with patients. Candidates must submit a curriculum vitae demonstrating formal training and employment history in psychodynamic/psychoanalytic psychotherapy for review by the psychiatry residency program leadership.

Statement of Work

1.0 Introduction

The contractor shall perform work as described in the Statement of Work (SOW).

2.0 Background

Training to gain sufficient competence in psychotherapy skills is particularly important to military psychiatrists who are often assigned to isolated duty stations as the sole mental health provider following their residency training. Full training in psychodynamic/psychoanalytic psychotherapy is a requirement to adequately teach and supervise psychiatry residents in psychotherapy. There are no NMCSD psychiatry faculty members credentialed to provide adequate instruction and supervision in psychodynamic/psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

However, there are independent private practice psychiatrists and clinical psychologists in the San Diego civilian community, who do have full psychodynamic/psychoanalytic training to effectively teach and supervise psychiatry residents in these required therapy skills.

This training must be done in person, through a significant portion of the year, which would negate the possibility of traveling for anyone who is not local. Group consultations and instruction cannot be conducted online due to the requirement for participants to practice skills that they are learning throughout the academic year, and that is only feasible by using an in-person format.

3.0 Scope of Work

To provide postgraduate year (PGY) 4 psychiatry residents formal in-person instruction and supervision in psychodynamic/psychoanalytic psychotherapy, to include the integration of psychoanalytical concepts in case formulation; and the development of awareness and technical approaches to transference and counter transferences with patients.
