NFA Attachment #3 – example of SME qualification and credential requirements

Principles of Building Construction: Combustible and Non-Combustible Online Conversion

Minimum Subject Matter Expert Credentials

Academic Requirement

1. A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education. The degree should be in a discipline closely related to the subjects covered in this course: i.e. fire or safety engineering, engineering technology, project management, or architecture.

Experiential Requirement

1. Current knowledge of the behavior of fire and its effects on building materials and systems, human behavior in fire situations, fire heat and smoke spread and travel in a structure, building construction classifications, and principles of controlling fire hazards as demonstrated by at least 5 years of experience or equivalent training within the last 10 years, or a combination of both experience and training.

2. Current knowledge of the National Fire Protection Association standards and at least one model building, mechanical, and fire code, as demonstrated by at least 5 years of experience or equivalent training within the last 10 years, or a combination of both experience and training.

3. Current knowledge of modern fire fighting practices, including, but not limited to incident size-up; development and delivery of a sustainable fire protection water supply; strategic and tactical considerations for fire control, and fire scene safety regulations and procedures.

Preferred Credentials and Experience

1. Professional licensure in one or more states as a structural engineer or architect.

2. Experience with the development of online courses.

3. International Fire Service Accreditation Congress or Professional Qualifications Board Fire Service Instructor II certification.
