3.1.3 Protective measures. The Contractor shall furnish and install all protective coverings to seal off and protect all non-affected vessel's components, equipment, and spaces near the work area against contamination during the performance of work. Upon completion of work, the Contractor shall remove all installed protective measures, inspect for the presence of contamination, and return all contaminated equipment, components, and spaces to original condition of cleanliness.

3.1.4 Interferences. The Contractor shall handle all interferences in accordance with SFLC Std Spec 0000, paragraph 3.3.5 (Interferences). Known interferences include, but are not limited to the following:

Piping

Electrical wiring

Exhaust piping thermal insulation

3.2 Operational test, initial. Prior to commencement of work, the Contractor shall witness Coast Guard personnel perform an initial operational test of #3 SSDG and check for exhaust leaks. Submit a CFR.

3.3 Exhaust piping cleaning and inspection. The Contractor shall clean and inspect SSDG #3 exhaust piping from where the exhaust air leaves the diesel engine to where the exhaust piping penetrates the hull.

Boundary of the scope of work is shown in red in Figure 1.

FIGURE 1. SSDG #3 EXHAUST PIPING

13 (Rev-1)

3.3.1 Preparation. Remove access covers, expansion joints, and flanged connections as necessary to allow complete access to all internal surfaces of the exhaust piping. When the expansion joint closest to the diesel engine is removed, immediately install a blank flange over the opening on the diesel engine and secure with at least four bolts 90o apart. Additional preparation notes and instructions are in Figure 2 below.

FIGURE 2. SSDG #3 EXHAUST PIPING VALVE AND EXPANSION JOINTS

14 (Rev-1)

CAUTION

The Contractor shall ensure that before any component/section of the exhaust piping system is removed, the remaining sections are adequately supported to avoid damage to the exhaust system caused by unsupported weight.

3.3.2 Mechanical cleaning. The Contractor shall employ suitable mechanical means to clean all interior surfaces of the exhaust piping, including removed expansion joints, access covers and all internal surfaces of associated components (water trap and silencer) to a condition free of soot, tar and other foreign material to facilitate inspection of the entire exhaust system.

3.3.2.1 Provide a suction blower and filter system on the outboard end of the section being cleaned to capture all the dirt and debris being dislodged.

CAUTION

If water or any solvent is used to clean the exhaust piping, ensure that it does not damage the surrounding area and equipment.

3.3.3 Exhaust valve CEDG3-V-2 valve removal. The Contractor shall coordinate the accomplishment of this work item with work item “SSDG #3 Exhaust Valve, Overhaul”.

3.4 Inspections. After completion of exhaust piping cleaning operation and in the presence of the CG

Inspector, the Contractor shall accomplish the following inspections and submit a CFR.

3.4.1 Internal surfaces. Visually inspect the exhaust piping interior surfaces for cleanliness. The surfaces shall be free of soot, dirt and other deposits.

3.4.2 External surfaces. Visually inspect all external surfaces of sections with removable lagging pads for corrosion, holes, leaks, or any signs of defects.

3.4.3 Muffler inspection. Inspect the muffler baffles for damages and the shell for any cracks.

3.4.4 Section of exhaust piping above the water trap. Do not remove the insulation around the section of the exhaust piping above the water trap since it will require disturbing the piping systems (chilled water, MP air, firemain, etc.) around it. Do not disturb the various piping systems above the water trap. See

Figure 3 below. The internal surfaces of the water trap can be viewed by removing the access plate on the side of the water trap.

15 (Rev-1)

FIGURE 3. INTERFERENCES ABOVE WATER TRAP

3.5 Reassembly. After all authorized work are completed, the Contractor shall reassemble and reinstall the piping, valve, expansion joints, and thermal insulation to the exhaust system. The Contractor shall renew all gaskets (using gasket materials specified in 750-WMSL-259-019, sheet 10), packing and lubrication. Remove the blank flanges installed. Renew all fasteners (nuts, locking tabs, bolts, and washers) according to ASTM grade and materials listed on referenced Coast Guard drawings above.

3.6 Post repair tightness test of the diesel exhaust system. The Contractor shall test the exhaust system, in the presence of the CG Inspector, by sealing off all opening and pressurizing each system with air to 15 inches of water in accordance with CG Dwg 750-WMSL-259-019 (General Notes #2). The system pressure shall not be less than 10.0 inches of water after 10 minutes. If the pressure loss exceeds 5.0 inches, the system leaks shall be repaired and the system retested. Submit a CFR.

3.7 Operational test, post repairs. After completion of work, the Contractor shall thoroughly test, in the presence of the Coast Guard Inspector and demonstrate all items or shipboard devices that have been disturbed, used, repaired, altered, or installed to be in satisfactory operating condition. Submit a CFR.

3.8 Touch-up preservation. The Contractor shall prepare and coat all new and disturbed surfaces to match existing adjacent surfaces in accordance with SFLC Std Spec 6310, paragraph 3.1.13 (Touch-ups and minor coating repairs.)
