USCG Great Inagua Base (Bahamas) to perform a 5 year service on engines A & B of the Gemini Generator. After completion of service, tested both Generators independently and also tested them paralleled together. Tested the Gemini system both under load, and without load, multiple times. The Gemini system operated as designed with no apparent issues, signs and/or symptoms there was an immediate and/or impending alternator failure(s).

Completed all planned generator service on GI & returned to Tampa on November 21st. Both Generators ran approximately 3 additional hours after my 17th – 21st visit.

November 29th received a distressed phone call from the USCG: requesting an emergency service visit on Dec.

1st 2016 to USCG GI Base (Bahamas) due to both Generators A & B failing during loss of island utility power. Arrived on site & found Gen A stator windings shorted. On Gen B found exciter field windings open & found wire # 4 had broken off at main coil.

I believe due to severity of the environment, being a tropical environment with extreme moisture, salt air and a salt plant only a short distance from USCG GI Base, that this played a major role in the multiple generator failures at the GI Base. A second condition of the failure on Gen B may be due to dissimilar metals, along with the moisture and corrosive environment, which may have sped the process up and caused wire #4’s connection point to weaken faster.

Also, neither Generator A & B have stator heaters, which is a must in a corrosive environment like that.
