About this file
This document provides clarification regarding deliverables and delivery dates for the Blackjack Pit Boss software and behavioral models under the Pit Boss BAA. The earliest version of the Pit Boss software is due at Preliminary Design Review and will be used for early software testing of buses, payloads, and the Pit Boss system at performer and integration labs. This software is not expected to have full functionality but active interfaces for communicating with other system components to allow end-to-end ground testing. The Pit Boss software behavioral models will be delivered two months after System Requirements Review. These behavioral models represent the input and output of each functional element and will be exercised in a system integration lab with multiple payload and bus combinations to evaluate mission system performance.

DARPA Blackjack Pit Boss Reference: HR001119S0012

Question & Answer
Change to Software Delivery Dates in Pit Boss BAA
In response to numerous questions on deliverables and delivery dates for Pit Boss Software (Table 3, Item
10) and Pit Boss Software Behavioral Models (Table 3, Item 12), DARPA provides this clarification to answers provided earlier in the BAA cycle, specifically Q&A #34, #35, #38, #50, and #52 found in Q&A Round 2 to Pit Boss BAA Amendment 2 both located here:
https://www.fbo.gov/spg/ODA/DARPA/CMO/HR001119S0012/listing.html
The change introduced in Amendment 2 of the Pit Boss BAA provides direction that the earliest version of Pit Boss Software (Item 10) will be due at PDR. The PDR version of Item 10 will be used for early software testing of buses, payloads, and Pit Boss at performers and system integration labs. PDR level software is not expected to have full functionality, but is expected to have early versions of software functions plus active interfaces capable of communicating with other system components sufficient to allow end-to-end ground testing of data pathways and system and network data flow from HMSI to Pit Boss edge processors and bus/payload combinations.
The BAA Amendment 2 also provides direction that the Pit Boss Software Behavioral Models (Item 12) will be delivered two months after SRR. These Behavioral Models delivered after SRR are software elements that represent the output and input of each functional element. The Pit Boss Software Behavioral Model will be exercised in a system integration lab environment with multiple different combinations of payloads, buses, and network behavioral models to evaluate mission system performance.
Answer 35 From:
“Please see answer 34. Phase I base should include delivery of Software Parameters and Behaviors descriptions/requirements due at SRR. Software Behavior models are due at PDR in Phase I, Option 1.”
To:
“Please see Answer 34 and clarification provided above”
Answer 38 From:
“Please see Answer 34. Deliverables for Phase 1 Base are software descriptions and requirements, whereas deliverables for Phase 1 – Option 1 are software models due at PDR” To:
“Please see Answer 34 and clarification provided above”
Answer 50 From:
“Per page 21-22, Phase 1 – Base defines the requirements for the program: delivering an approach to extensible and scalable mission and software architectures at SRR. Phase 1 – Option 1 completes the Pit Boss HMSI Preliminary Design Review, and will include deliverables of scenario-based virtual mission testing and models of software behavior. Deliverables for Phase 1 Base are software requirements (SRR), https://www.fbo.gov/spg/ODA/DARPA/CMO/HR001119S0012/listing.html https://www.fbo.gov/spg/ODA/DARPA/CMO/HR001119S0012/listing.html https://www.fbo.gov/spg/ODA/DARPA/CMO/HR001119S0012/listing.html
