The FHWA Office of Highway Policy Information (HPPI) provides essential support to all FHWA programs and offices in the execution of the Federal-aid highway program. The office manages a broad spectrum of data and data tools, encompassing infrastructure metrics such as travel demand and pavement condition; traffic-related information including volume, speed, classification, and weight; behavioral travel pattern insights; travel behavior trends, modes and purposes. Additionally, the scope also includes the collection and analysis of vehicle registration, driver licensing, roadway inventory, fuel consumption, and detailed highway finance data at the local, state, and Federal levels. Key data systems supporting these efforts include the Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS), the Travel Monitoring Analysis System (TMAS), the National Household Travel Survey (NHTS), and 500 Series Data Tools and Portals. To ensure these datasets remain high-quality, timely, and comprehensive, the office also performs extensive research into advanced data methodologies.
