DESCRIPTION OF OUR ORGANIZATION AND PARTICULAR AREAS OF EXPERTISE
GeoCensos is a legally registered foundation supported by a community of geo data experts and enthusiastic mappers, working on open geo technologies and innovation. We can count over 60 members working in 7 countries, having developed together more than 27 geo apps and supported 5 national census processes by the advocacy of the good use of geospatial data. Our experience is characterized by an active participation and involvement in the opening, generating, processing and displaying of geo data in governments and its analysis assisted by civil society volunteers. We develop our projects using all kinds of geo data platforms such as Arc GIS, gvSIG, Q GIS, OpenStreetMap and Google Maps / Earth. We have developed for 10 years now solid bonds within the regions of Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa. We are a vigorous and participative community, having our members attended, developed and/or organized more than 30 international events since 2010; including data forums, summits, conferences, mapathons and hackathons. We are also experienced in training and participating at geospatial consultancy projects in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru and Spain. We specialize in four interrelated areas to potentiate the diffusion, development and deployment of applied geo technologies.
★ Developing Open Data Surveys, research and studies: We regularly research on several data revolution issues, interested in the promotion and development of geo data applications and platforms and working on information and data management with official data authorities. Also supporting open government and big data projects in public organizations, companies and entrepreneurial associations.
★ Training and transferring knowledge: We have delivered tailored training and other special events on diverse formats in those areas of our domain. Our initiatives are aimed to develop startups and spin offs within the official statistical ecosystem. Ours is an original contribution from the civic tech community, bringing together grassroot organizations and governments.
★ Organizing Hackathons , Mapathons and other events We have a solid experience in technology and global open data events, featuring and developing throughout the Latin American region datathons, mapathons and mapping parties. We supported NASA’s Space Apps Challenge, OSM Geo week and the Open Data Day, among others. Our experience on a great diversity of participatory formats has allowed us to understand, integrate and impact networks of civic tech young activists. We specialize in massive collaboration events using data and technologies for altruistic purposes.
★ Writing Proposals and Reports : As entrepreneurs, we admit we have a long tradition of rejections and failure when proposing innovative topics to established organizations. Anyway, a few but groundbreaking successes like the Stat Up project allow us to think we are in the right track.
SOME OF OUR RECENT EXPERIENCES
● We presented the statement “Production, Use and Complementation of Geospatial Data with the participation of civil society” at the 9th ECLAC / SCA meeting and the UN-GGIM conferences respectively in Aguascalientes and Mexico City in November, 2017 together with OpenStreetMap, Geotactics, Open North and Development Gateway .
● Participated in the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data at the UN Data Forum in January 2017 in Cape Town, South Africa.

● In 2016, we portrayed updated results from the Stats Up project at State of the Map US Conference in Seattle . Also, we trained on census data collaboration at the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data workshops in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam.
POTENTIAL VALUE WE CAN ADD TO THE PARTNERSHIP
What we can provide to the partnership is a seasoned expertise in the above areas and a solid experience to team work and build sustainable civic tech projects to map together a better world with open data.
We have already championed within the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data portraying our open collaboration experiences on census with the Stats Up project at the SDG roadmap workshops in Kenya and Tanzania from August 9 to 17, 2016 in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam to open data with civic technologies. We also feel comfortable working with members of the World Wide Foundation in Sierra Leone and have worked closely with the local government of Casablanca, Morocco, contributing to the civic tech movement in smart cities.
Our networks are global and we can cement alliances with a great diversity of stakeholder ranging from members of OpenStreetMap to high rank officers from UNFPA, knowledgeable of humanitarian cooperation operations and economic development projects with international cooperation. In our past projects, we got acquainted with big and small players from all kind of sectors like NASA, Second Muse, ESRI, OpenStreetMap foundation, Junar, Mapbox and also city governments, collaborating frequently with international organizations and all kinds of universities.
Based on networks like the above we can assure a successful contribution to this grant call by summoning geodata volunteers from all around the global south, always working hard to serve our mission: to promote and support the good use of geospatial data in all levels of government, supporting knowledge exchange and an inclusive data revolution.
As technological activists with solid ethical values actively working for a data revolution, we believe in a revolution for a greater equality in the world. A more and more open world, where data can help ensure that global knowledge is shared, creating communities of more informed and empowered citizens, able to hold decision-makers accountable for relevant actions.
We are ready to:
● Develop a local and global consensus on geo data collection principles and standards, walking the talk along with the public and private sectors, especially data and statistics providers from all parties to build trust and confidence among the global data community.
● Enhance opportunities for minority groups (of ethnic, gender, sexual identity, religious and social diversity), favoring inclusive actions in the territory.
● Promote open use and access to geo data, sharing in particular data sets that have been generated with public funds.
● Share data, technology and innovations, creating mechanisms through which technology and innovation can be shared and used for the common good.
● Make available new resources of data for capacity development, improving data to target existing resources and spur new economic opportunities.
