Install trim with minimum number of joints as is practical, using full-length pieces from maximum lengths of lumber available. Do not use pieces less than 24 inches (610 mm) long, except where necessary.

Use scarf joints for end-to-end joints.

Stagger end joints in adjacent and related members.

Fit exterior joints to exclude water.

Cope at returns and miter at corners to produce tight-fitting joints, with full-surface contact throughout length of joint.

Plane backs of casings to provide uniform thickness across joints, where necessary for alignment.

Where face fastening is unavoidable, countersink fasteners, fill surface flush, and sand unless otherwise indicated.

INSTALLATION OF SIDING

Panel Siding:

Install panels with edges over framing or blocking.

Nail at 6 inches (150 mm) o.c. at panel perimeter and 12 inches (300 mm) o.c. at intermediate supports unless manufacturer recommends closer spacing.

Leave 1/16-inch (1.5-mm) gap between adjacent panels and 1/8-inch (3-mm) gap at perimeter, openings, and horizontal joints unless otherwise recommended by panel manufacturer.

Seal butt joints at inside and outside corners and at trim locations.

Install continuous metal flashing at horizontal panel joints.

Apply battens and corner trim as indicated. Countersink nail heads, fill flush, and sand filler.

Do not nail through overlapping pieces.

Finish: Apply finish within two weeks of installation.
