HIGH-PERFORMANCE WASH RACK FLOOR COATING
1. APPLICABLE PUBLICATIONS
The publications listed below form a part of this specification to the extent referenced. The publications are referred to within the text by the basic designation only.
• UFC 4-211-01: Aircraft Maintenance Hangars (for operational clearances and striping).
• UFGS 09 67 23: Resinous Flooring.
• SSPC-SP 13 / NACE No. 6: Surface Preparation of Concrete.
• ASTM D7234: Standard Test Method for Pull-Off Adhesion Strength of Coatings on Concrete.
• ASTM F2170: Standard Test Method for Determining Relative Humidity in Concrete Floor
Slabs Using In-situ RH (Relative Humidity) Probes.
2. MATERIALS & PRODUCTS
2.1 System Requirements
The contractor shall provide a multi-coat, high-performance resinous flooring system explicitly designed for heavy vehicular traffic, aviation maintenance, and continuous wet operations (wash rack).
2.2 Chemical Resistance
The cured coating system must exhibit zero degradation, softening, or loss of adhesion when exposed to JP-8 aviation fuel, standard aircraft detergents, and aviation hydraulic fluids (including Skydrol).
2.3 Slip Resistance
The topcoat must include an integral broadcast aggregate (e.g., aluminum oxide) to provide a non-slip, anti-skid surface suitable for continuous wet wash rack operations.
2.4 Color and Light Reflectance
The final topcoat shall be a standard aviation light gray or off-white, possessing a minimum Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of 60% to enhance visibility beneath the aircraft during wash operations.
FP1020977 APPENDIX D – SPECIFICATIONS Refurbish Wash Rack Floor, F129
2.5 Moisture Mitigation Primer
The system’s base coat/primer must be an aviation-grade Moisture Vapor Barrier (MVB) formulated to prevent coating delamination caused by hydrostatic pressure and moisture vapor transmission from the concrete slab.
3. EXECUTION
3.1 Environmental Conditions
Do not apply floor coatings unless the ambient temperature and substrate temperature are strictly within the manufacturer’s recommended tolerances.
3.2 Surface Preparation
All existing coatings, sealants, and contaminants must be completely removed. Concrete shall be mechanically prepared via shot-blasting or diamond grinding to meet SSPC-SP 13 / NACE No. 6 standards. The final prepared concrete must possess a Concrete Surface Profile (CSP) of 3 to 5, or as explicitly required by the coating manufacturer's technical data sheet.
3.3 Application
Apply primer, intermediate coats, and topcoats at the manufacturer's recommended Dry Film Thickness (DFT). Allow proper curing times between coats as dictated by the manufacturer.
4. QUALITY CONTROL & TESTING
4.1 Adhesion Testing
Prior to final acceptance, the contractor may be required to perform a pull-off adhesion test in accordance with ASTM D7234 to verify the coating system has properly bonded to the concrete substrate. Any areas failing the adhesion test must be removed and replaced at the contractor’s expense.
4.2 Moisture Testing
Prior to any coating application, the Contractor shall perform concrete moisture testing in strict accordance with ASTM F2170 to determine the internal Relative Humidity of the concrete slab. The Contractor must submit the documented RH test results to the Government. The moisture mitigation primer must be applied strictly according to the coating manufacturer's requirements for the recorded moisture levels.
