About this file

This is a Request for Proposals (RFP) issued by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Office of Highway Safety for the Kentucky Safe Teen Driving Challenge Sponsorship Opportunity. The RFP seeks sponsors to support cash prizes for a teen driving safety competition targeting Kentucky drivers ages 15-19, with sponsorship levels ranging from $500 to $5,000. The competition will be held in early 2025, with registration period from January 14-24, 2025 and contest duration from January 25 to March 31, 2025. Proposals are due by September 19, 2025 at 2:00 PM EST, and the contract will fund student and school prizes to be awarded in December 2025.

Sponsors will receive benefits including logo placement on the contest landing page, recognition on Highway Safety social media accounts, inclusion in press releases, and participation in a statewide youth safety initiative. The competition uses a mobile app to track driving behaviors such as speeding, phone distraction, hard braking, sharp turning, and rapid acceleration, with the previous year's contest attracting over 1,200 teen drivers and approximately 800 active participants. The initiative aims to reduce teen driving accidents, building on data showing over 47,000 crashes involving teen drivers in Kentucky in the past three years, resulting in more than 13,000 injuries and 210 deaths.

How We Engaged Teens

To build excitement and awareness, the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety launched a statewide outreach campaign targeting teens, parents, and educators. Tactics included:

Social media promotion on Instagram and Facebook

Outreach to schools, counselors, and youth organizations across the Commonwealth

Earned media through press releases and local news stories

In-school materials like posters and digital toolkits for announcements and newsletters

Support from key partners, including AAA, the Kentucky State Police (KSP), the Education Cabinet, and Governor Andy Beshear, who promoted the contest and emphasized its role in protecting young Kentuckians

Messaging was teen-friendly while reinforcing the importance of safe driving. Parents and educators were encouraged to support and promote student participation.

How It Worked

After registering, participants downloaded the contest app and began driving as normal. The app automatically tracked driving behaviors throughout the contest period which was January 25 to March 31.

Drivers were scored based on a combination of safety metrics:

Speeding

Phone distraction

Hard braking

Sharp turning

Rapid acceleration

Teens received feedback throughout the challenge and were motivated to improve their scores.

Final prize winners were selected based on their overall safety performance.

Goals Achieved and Key Metrics

Over 1,200 teen drivers signed up for the challenge across Kentucky, demonstrating broad interest and engagement.

Approximately 800 participants actively drove and improved their driving behavior throughout the contest period.

Nearly 500 teens achieved safe driving scores of 80% or higher, reflecting significant adoption of safer driving habits.

The reduction in risky behaviors like speeding, phone distraction, hard braking, sharp turning, and rapid acceleration was reflected in the improved app scores.

The campaign reached thousands through social media, school outreach, and media coverage, supported by partners including AAA, KSP, the Education Cabinet, and Governor Andy Beshear.

The contest sparked meaningful conversations about driving safety in homes and schools, amplifying its impact beyond just the participants.

Impact

The initiative received strong backing from Governor Beshear, who highlighted its alignment with his commitment to protecting families and building a safer Kentucky.

Winners were announced in April 2025 and recognized across KOHS platforms and partner channels.

By combining telematics-based monitoring with strategic outreach and meaningful rewards, the Safe Teen Driving Challenge gave Kentucky teens the tools and motivation to drive safer. It also demonstrated how strong partnerships across government, law enforcement, and education can work together to create life-saving habits behind the wheel.
