About this file

This is a technical design standard document from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) providing specifications for concrete sidewalk construction on curbed roadways. The document, Index No. 310, establishes detailed guidelines for sidewalk design, materials, and construction methods applicable to the City of Bartow's Main Street project, which encompasses concrete curbing, sidewalks, and driveways extending from Highway 60 west of town to the railroad right-of-way east of Highway 17. The standard specifications require sidewalks to be constructed in accordance with FDOT Section 522, with clear widths ranging from 4 feet minimum (in restricted conditions with engineer approval) to 5 or 6 feet standard. Sidewalks must include edge beams measuring 1 foot thick where surface-mounted pedestrian/bicycle picket railings or pipe guiderails are specified, with concrete depths and joint configurations varying based on turnout conditions and expansion requirements.

The design standard specifies particular construction details including joint placement requirements, with expansion joints required when sidewalk runs exceed 120 feet, saw-cut joints at maximum 30-foot centers, and dummy joints tooled at maximum 5-foot centers. Bond breaker material must meet minimum specifications of 6 mils thickness, and curb ramps are required to include detectable warnings per Index No. 304, except where sidewalks intersect urban flared turnouts. The standard also establishes that sidewalk costs shall be paid under the contract unit price for sidewalk concrete measured in square yards, with edge beam costs included in the sidewalk price. These technical requirements represent the baseline standards that contractors bidding on the City of Bartow project must follow for all concrete sidewalk work.
