About this file

This is a technical design standard document from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) providing detailed specifications for curb and gutter construction types and configurations. The document serves as a reference guide for the City of Bartow's Main Street concrete curbing, sidewalk, and driveway project, which spans from Highway 60 west of town to the railroad right-of-way east of Highway 17. The FDOT standards illustrate multiple curb and gutter types (Types A through F, including specialty configurations), cross-sectional profiles, joint details, and construction notes to ensure consistent and compliant installation across the project area. The specifications include various curb endings (flared and straight), expansion and contraction joint placement requirements at maximum 10-foot centers, and specific applications for different pavement conditions and traffic scenarios, including roundabout central island construction requirements.

The document establishes technical parameters including minimum and maximum dimensions for component elements such as gutter depths, lip thicknesses, cross slopes, and joint configurations. Key construction requirements specify that contraction joints in curbs and gutters adjacent to concrete pavement must match pavement joint patterns, expansion joints and preformed joint fillers are required between curb and gutter and concrete pavement only, and curb Types B and D shall transition from full to zero heights over a 3-foot minimum distance. The specifications note that concrete curbs should be cast or rubbed on the high side to be flush with the lip of curb or gutter, and that sawcuts should be avoided within valley gutters and curb endings. These standards ensure that the City of Bartow's contractor will construct durable, properly-jointed concrete curbing that meets state transportation engineering requirements and integrates appropriately with existing and new pavement conditions along the Main Street project corridor.
