SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE
Document Version Number: <1.0> Document Version Date: <mm/dd/yyyy> Notes to the Author
[This document is a template of a System Architecture document for a project. The template includes instructions to the author, boilerplate text, and fields that should be replaced with the values specific to the project.
· Blue italicized text enclosed in square brackets ([text]) provides instructions to the document author, or describes the intent, assumptions and context for content included in this document.
· Blue italicized text enclosed in angle brackets (<text>) indicates a field that should be replaced with information specific to a particular project.
· Text and tables in black are provided as boilerplate examples of wording and formats that may be used or modified as appropriate to a specific project. These are offered only as suggestions to assist in developing project documents; they are not mandatory formats.
When using this template, the following steps are recommended:
1. Replace all text enclosed in angle brackets (e.g., <Project Name>) with the correct field document values. These angle brackets appear in both the body of the document and in headers and footers. To customize fields in Microsoft Word (which display a gray background when selected) select File->Properties->Summary and fill in the appropriate fields within the Summary and Custom tabs.
After clicking OK to close the dialog box, update all fields throughout the document selecting Edit>Select All (or Ctrl-A) and pressing F9. Or you can update each field individually by clicking on it and pressing F9.
These actions must be done separately for any fields contained with the document’s Header and Footer.
2. Modify boilerplate text as appropriate for the specific project.
3. To add any new sections to the document, ensure that the appropriate header and body text styles are maintained. Styles used for the Section Headings are Heading 1, Heading 2 and Heading 3. Style used for boilerplate text is Body Text.
4. To update the Table of Contents, right-click on it and select “Update field” and choose the option - “Update entire table”.
5. Before submission of the first draft of this document, delete this instruction section “Notes to the Author” and all instructions to the author throughout the entire document.

1.0 Executive Summary
[In one paragraph, describe the major changes to performance, processes, data, applications, services and technology that this system will provide. Highlight not only the changes, but also the reason for the change. Be sure that all changes are further detailed in the below sections.]
2.0 Purpose of a System architecture
The purpose of the System Architecture is to document and understand the motivations and impacts of all system improvements, and modifications proposed by the project. Understanding the motivations will help the project team focus on delivering intended business value while understanding the impacts will ensure the solution is will not negatively effect the existing environment. This general understanding of the reasons for and impacts of change will help guide the project and ultimately improve the project success rate.
The intended audience of the <Project Name> System Architecture is all project stakeholders including the project sponsor, senior leadership and the project team.
3.0 As-Is Characterization
3.1 Performance
[In the table below, document the current business performance measures that are or will be enabled by this system and their current values. List from one to five the most relevant measures.]
Performance Measure
Current Value
[Example Measure: Number of products produced in one hour.]
[Example Value: 16]
3.2 Processes
[Document the current key project business processes. If available, list the processes described in the Business Process Model Artifact.]
· <Major Process A>
· <Sub-Process>
· <Sub-Process>
· <Major Process B>
· <Major Process C>
· <Sub-Process>
3.3 Process Enablement & Automation
[Describe how each process is currently automated. Explain how IT is supporting the relevant business processes and performance measures.]
4.0 To-Be ARCHITECTURE
4.1 Performance
[In the table below, document the target key system performance measures and their target values. List from one to five the most relevant measures. Each measure should clearly state the timeframe in which the qualitative target measure should be achieved. Focus on what this project is trying to accomplish.]
Performance Measure
Target Value
Target Date
[Example Measure: Increase the number of p produced in one hour by 4.]
[Example Value: 20]
[Example: 2/3/2010]
4.2 Processes
[Document the target key project business processes. These processes should be the same as the as is processes, with some potential adjustment for scope increases or decreases. If available, list the processes described in the Business Process Model Artifact.]
· <Major Process A>
· <Sub-Process>
· <Sub-Process>
· <Major Process B>
· <Major Process C>
