About this file
This document is a revised pre-bid meeting agenda for a state contract opportunity related to the procurement of face masks, respirators, face shields, and goggles. The Infection Control Workgroup in coordination with local Infection Control Experts have reviewed CDC and IDPH guidelines and set forth the approved definitions, requirements, and usage guidelines for these items. The guidelines specify the appropriate types of face coverings, when eye/face protection is required, and the required PPE for various circumstances such as cleaning isolation/quarantine rooms, conducting admissions/readmissions, and performing aerosolizing procedures. The document also provides options to improve mask fit, including the use of nose wires and knotting/tucking techniques.
The document outlines the transmission rate-based PPE requirements for patient/resident areas and non-patient/residential areas. It specifically requires fit-tested N95 respirators and face shields/goggles for certain staff roles and activities. The document references the CDC's mask fit and filtration guidance and provides detailed information on the appropriate use of face coverings and PPE in various scenarios, including CPAP/BIPAP usage, specimen collection, and entering isolation/quarantine rooms.

Options to Improve Mask Fit
Nose Wires: Use cloth or medical procedure masks that have a nose wire (a metal strip along the top of the mask) to help prevent air leakage at the top of the mask. Nose wires can also help to prevent fogging of eyeglasses. To get a good fit, make sure to bend the nose wire over your nose to conform to your face
Knotting and Tucking: This technique can be used to improve the fit of a medical procedure mask. Knot the ear loops of the mask where they join the edge of the mask, then fold and tuck the unneeded material under the edges.
