About this file
This document provides an overview of the AFRL Rocket Lab Hermes BAA solicitation and the Eternal Quiver Industry Day presentation. The solicitation seeks white papers and future contract proposals to conduct study efforts, research and development, and mature technologies related to solid rocket motors and manufacturing capabilities. Specific areas of interest include continuous microfluidic propellant production, additive manufacturing of propellants and cases, acoustic mixing techniques, novel cure methods, filament winding, nozzle fabrication, quality assurance, and integrated design software. The Eternal Quiver effort aims to develop a rapidly deployable "Rocket Factory in a Box" capability to manufacture solid rocket motors from shipping containers with minimal external support. Goals include 75% reductions in production time, manpower and tooling requirements. The estimated budget is $20 million over four years. An IPT approach incorporating government, contractors, and end users is desired.

Eternal Quiver Vision AFRL/RQRM is seeking to develop radically new solid rocket motor (SRM) manufacturing capability to enable agile, resilient logistics “Rocket Factory In-a-Box” (RFIB): Rapidly manufacture SRMs in an automated (or nearly automated) fashion from one or more 40 foot shipping containers with limited external facility support FY20-FY23: “Gen 0” proof-of-concept demo FY24-FY27: “Gen 1” prototype of capability Complementary digital design effort to reduce time and manpower involved in design of SRMs Design custom motors tailored to mission, digitally “test”, and then manufacture in “Rocket Factory In-a-Box” Revolutionary, fast-moving, high risk tolerance

Interested in any ideas that contractors have that would contribute to Eternal Quiver overall goals Possibilities include, but are not limited to:
Continuous microfluidic reactions to produce precision solid propellant ingredients Additive manufacturing of propellant Acoustic mixing of propellant (with or without mix-in-case capability) Novel propellant cure methods Direct Filament Wind (DFW) manufacture of composite case Nozzle fabrication NDE or QA methods Not required to be a complete, end-to-end system, but must make significant contribution to Eternal Quiver goals Solely miniaturizing legacy technology (e.g., bread mixers, ovens) is not desired, but may be an element of a larger solution Manufacturing Technology Development Distribution Statement A: Approved for Public Release; Distribution is Unlimited. PA Clearance Number 20242
Integrated Design, Analysis, and Optimization Software Interested in any ideas that contractors have that would contribute to a software capability to rapidly design SRMs in an automated (or nearly automated) fashion to support Eternal Quiver vision Modeling & simulation software, frameworks, and/or processes that enable:
90% reduction in design time for solid rocket motors Significant reduction in manpower required for design processes “Digital Test Stand” capability to dramatically shorten test and qualification process Not required to be a complete solution, but must make a significant contribution to overall goals
