autonumlgl SCOPE autonumlgl GENERAL SCOPE This appendix establishes the minimum performance, design, fabrication, installation, and test requirements for cantilever rack for the Ohio ANGB at Toledo. The work shall be completed in accordance with this appendix, the cover PD, and Air Force (AF) Figures 4 & 5. This appendix is intended to cover all equipment, materials, and labor necessary to complete installation of the system.
autonumlgl DEFINITIONS Arm ‑ Horizontal load carrying member which locks to the upright.
Base ‑ Horizontal load carrying member which rests on the floor and supports the upright.
Bracing ‑ Steel bracing which is used to attach adjacent uprights to each other and space adjacent uprights from each other. Bracing prevents twisting and swaying.
Decking ‑ A solid steel surface spanning the area between two parallel arms used for storage of loose items.
Upright ‑ Vertical load carrying member which supports the cantilever arms. Also known as column.
autonumlgl APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS
Applicable documents shall be per section 2 of the cover PD.
autonumlgl REQUIREMENTS autonumlgl SYSTEM DESCRIPTION The cantilever racks covered by this Appendix are intended for storing a variety of nonstandard sized items. The racks shall be installed as shown on Figures 4 & 5. The cantilever rack shall consist of the following components:
a. Bases
b. Uprights
c. Bracing (horizontal and diagonal)
d. Arms
e. Mechanical fasteners and all other items required to install the cantilever rack.
autonumlgl CHARACTERISTICS autonumlgl CANTILEVER RACK DESIGN All components shall be constructed to produce a rigid, stable rack. The design and construction of each load bearing component shall ensure that the component is capable of sustaining the maximum load with a safety factor of not less than 1.65 to 1. No component of the cantilever rack shall exhibit any permanent deformation once the maximum load has been removed.
autonumlgl BASES There shall be one base for each upright in the system. It shall provide support for the upright and shall prevent the racks from leaning or collapsing when the rack is loaded to capacity. The base shall be at least as long as the upright depth plus the length of the arm.
autonumlgl UPRIGHTS Uprights shall have an overall height of seven feet and a means for adjusting arms on nominal three inch centers. The uprights shall be spaced on six foot centers.
Note: The capacity is calculated by multiplying the capacity of the arms by the number of arms attached to one upright (the bases are not included).
autonumlgl BRACING Horizontal and diagonal bracing shall be used to maintain alignment of the cantilever racks under varying loads and horizontal stresses.
autonumlgl HORIZONTAL BRACING A minimum of two horizontal braces are required between every two uprights.
autonumlgl ARMS The rack shall have at least seven arms for each upright with removable end stops to prevent loose materials from falling off the arms. Each arm shall have a capacity of 500 pounds. Arms shall be 14 inches long and shall fasten securely to the uprights by use of a connector. The arms shall have an upward pitch to compensate for any deflection under full rated load. No arm, when loaded to capacity, shall deflect below the horizontal plane.
autonumlgl CONNECTORS The connector shall be capable of transferring all loads and external forces of the arm to the column without failure of the connection, or damage to the column or connector. The connectors shall ensure a snug, metal-to-metal fit between the horizontal and vertical load carrying members.
autonumlgl SAFETY CATCH FEATURE If adjustable connectors are used, a safety catch feature shall be provided on each arm to securely lock the arm to the column at the assembly. Design of the catch feature shall preclude the arm from dislodging due to impact or movement of the racks.
autonumlgl QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS autonumlgl INSPECTIONS The cantilever rack shall be inspected to verify that it meets all the requirements of sections 1, 2, and 3 of this appendix and the cover purchase description. These inspections shall be completed as part of the system checkout test and again as a part of the quality conformance test.
autonumlgl TESTS The following tests shall be performed on the system as part of the system checkout test and again as a part of the quality conformance test.
No.
Paragraph
Description
1.
3.2.1.
Maximum loads shall be placed randomly in the rack system. After not less than four hours, the test loads shall be removed and the rack examined for signs of deformation. If any component of the system exhibits permanent deformation, the system fails the test.
2.
3.2.5.
Maximum loads shall be placed randomly in the rack system. After not less than four hours, the system will be examined for signs of deformation. If any arm deflects below the horizontal plane, the system fails the test.
autonumlgl CERTIFICATIONS The Contractor shall provide certification that the following requirements have been met. All certifications shall be provided in accordance with the Contract Data Requirements List.
No.
Paragraph
Certifications
1.
3.2.1.
The design and construction of each load bearing component ensures that the component is capable of sustaining the maximum load with a safety factor of not less than 1.65 to 1.
