i. Conduit, wiring, mechanical fasteners, anchors, and all other items required to install the mobile storage system.

j. Rolling ladder stand

Performance and physical characteristics System operation Each carriage shall have a crank mechanism, which shall be turned manually clockwise or counterclockwise to move the carriage in the desired direction. No more than five pounds of force on the crank shall be required to move a fully loaded carriage.

Carriages Six carriages shall be provided, upon which shelving units shall be installed. Carriages shall consist of a frame and drive train. All carriages shall be capable of supporting a minimum load of 1,000 pounds per carriage foot. No system component shall deflect greater than 0.5 percent of the distance between supports when fully loaded. No component shall exhibit permanent deformation after the maximum load has been removed.

Frame The frame shall consist of aluminum or steel channel, welded or bolted together to support a fully loaded shelving section. Cross bracing shall ensure rigidity. Bumpers shall be mounted on the frame, spaced appropriately to minimize carriage contact. The frame shall be designed for an integral drive train.

Drive chain Drive chain shall connect a set of gear reduction sprockets from the crank shaft to the drive shaft.

Drive shafts Drive shafts shall be made of steel. Splices or connections to other sections of the drive shaft, drive wheels, and gears shall be slotted for key joints or use shoulder bolts.

Bearings Bearings shall have a static load rating equal to or greater than the maximum bearing loading, including applicable safety factors, under all operating conditions. Bearings shall be permanently lubricated, securely mounted, and properly housed for protection from physical damage.

Wheels Each carriage shall have two wheels per rail. Each carriage shall have at least two drive wheels and at least two guide wheels (drive wheels may also act as guide wheels). All wheels shall be balanced, hardened steel. Wheels which are connected to the drive shaft shall be slotted for key joints. Wheels shall be capable of supporting the fully loaded carriage. Wheels shall not slide or lose contact with the rail.

Guidance system All carriages shall use flanged wheels or guide bearings for guidance over the rails. If flanged wheels are used, each carriage shall have a minimum of two flanged guide wheels. If guide bearings are used, then each carriage shall have a minimum of two sets of guide bearings.

Stationary platforms Two stationary platforms (Rows A&N) shall be provided. They shall be of the same construction and height as the carriages, but they shall be anchored to the rails or floor and require no drive train.

Shelving sections Bin shelving, which conforms to the requirements of Appendix B shall be bolted (with nuts) to the carriages and stationary platforms.

Face panels Fire retardant, decorative, face panels shall be fastened to one end of all the shelving sections. Face panels shall provide a rigid mounting location for controls and card holders

Row identification Card holders shall be installed on the face panels for row identification. Two card holders shall be mounted on each face panel unless the row is accessible from only one side, in that case only one card holder is required. The card holders shall be at least five inches wide by three inches high and mounted at eye level so that operators can locate numbers easily. Row identification cards will be made up by the warehouse personnel according to their established location assignment practices. A blank card will be provided by the Contractor for each card holder.

Rail Installation The carriages shall move over steel rail assemblies, mounted on top of the floor. After leveling the rails, load bearing grout shall be used to fill in any gaps between the rail assemblies and the existing floor. Rails shall be installed no more than seven feet apart.

Elevated flooring Elevated flooring shall be Resindek or approved equivalent and be able to support a load of 75 pounds per square foot. Flooring shall be sized to fit between the rails, level with the top of the rails, in order to provide a safe walking surface for personnel. Adjacent sheets of flooring shall be shimmed along the full length of the common side. The elevated flooring shall extend to the back wall.

RAMP

A metal ramp shall be provided on one end of the system, which permits easy access by a rolling ladder stand. The grade on this ramp shall not exceed 10 percent.

Safety devices Anti-movement lock Each carriage shall be equipped with a mechanism which will lock the carriage in place while the operator is in the aisle.

Automatic aisle lighting When an aisle is created, overhead lighting shall be activated. This light shall remain on until another aisle is selected or until the power is turned off. This lighting shall consist of dual bulb, four foot long, fluorescent fixtures (with diffuser lens) located as shown on Air Force Figures 3-8. A light switch shall be installed on the adjacent wall, which allows the automatic light system to be turned on/off.

Rolling ladder stand One rolling ladder stand shall be provided by the Contractor. This ladder stand shall enable the operator to safely store and retrieve objects from the higher shelves of the system. The ladder stand shall have a minimum capacity of 350 pounds and shall be easily moved by one person. The platform shall be at least 70 inches above the floor.

Steps The steps shall be 24 inches wide and have a nonskid surface.

Handrails The ladder stand shall have handrails, which are at least 30 inches above the steps. The platform shall have handrails around three sides.

Casters Each ladder stand shall roll on a minimum of four metal casters with rubber tires. The two casters nearest to the bottom of the steps shall be swivel casters.

Locking device The swivel casters shall be equipped with a locking device. This locking device shall be foot activated and be capable of raising the swivel casters off the floor (supporting the ladder stand on two fixed feet) or use the operator's weight to push two spring-loaded fixed feet onto the floor. This device shall prevent the ladder stand from moving until the operator unlocks the locking device.

Rubber caps The locking feet of the ladder stand shall be fitted with rubber caps to prevent the ladder stand from slipping while the lock is activated. All rubber caps shall be reinforced with metal to prevent the feet from wearing through the rubber caps.

Electrical characteristics The Contractor shall furnish and install all equipment for power distribution to the system in accordance with NFPA 70.

QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS

Inspections The system shall be inspected to verify that it meets all the requirements of sections 1, 2, and 3 of this appendix and the cover purchase description. These inspections shall be completed as part of the systems checkout test and again as a part of the quality conformance test.

Tests The following tests shall be performed on the system as part of the system checkout test and again as a part of the quality conformance test.

Description
1.
3.2.1.
A functional test of 24 hours in three eight hour increments shall be made on the system. It shall be tested randomly over this period. Test each crank by turning it both clockwise and counterclockwise. If the carriage does not move in the desired direction, the system fails the test.
2.
3.2.2.
The deflection test shall be performed randomly on any system component. The Contractor shall load the selected shelves to maximum loading. The shelves shall remain loaded for four continuous hours. At the end of the four hour period, the system shall be checked for deflection. If any system component deflects more than 0.5 percent of the distance between supports when fully loaded, the system fails the test. If any component exhibits permanent deformation after the maximum load has been removed, the system fails the test.
3.
3.2.10.1.
Test each anti-movement lock. If a carriage can be moved with a lock activated, the system fails the test.
