Statement of Work For

Microwave Absorber for the AFIT Chamber

Title: Microwave Absorber

Document Date: 14 September 2018

The purpose of the SOW is to have Microwave Absorber polystyrene installed at Wright- Patterson AFB, OH, building 168 in Area B. The absorbent material is used in the RF Microwave chamber used to absorb spurious frequencies to help the students detect items inside the chamber. The current foam absorbers on the chamber walls are damaged, old and obsolete and no longer meets the needs of experiments being performed in the chamber. New Microwave absorber foam is needed on the chamber walls to return the chamber to test standards.

1. Scope: The service will call for removal of old obsolete polyurethane foam absorber from the walls of AFIT’s antenna chamber and replacing it with new polystyrene Microwave Absorber model MT65 and 45 to provide 500 panels worth of coverage for the walls of the chamber. The contractor will provide a recommended absorber layout for approval before the shipment is made. Minor changes to the absorber count may be made at that time. The chamber floors were replaced in April of 2018, replacement of the chamber floors is not part of this requirement. The contractor will be responsible for protecting the lab and chamber floor prior to any work. As well as, removal and disposal of all the old (blue) absorber from the chamber walls, and preparation of all surfaces to accept the new absorber treatment. The contractor will install Comtest/DMAS polystyrene absorber model MT65 and 45 per approved layout.

1.1 Background: The Absorber foam material is required of all RF experiments done in the chamber. The absorber foam must also match salient characteristics below.

2 Requirements/Salient Characteristics:

• Material: Closed-cell carbon-loaded polystyrene; MT65 / MT45 Absorber: QTY: 500 (600mm x 1200mm) total panels of vendor choice combination MT65/MT45 quoted on a per unit basis

• ECT45 white end caps in hallway areas only: 256 square feet

• Height: >= 18”

• Humidity resistance: No deterioration from moisture

• Product life time: > 25 years

• Power Handling: > 200 V/m

• Frequency range: 1 – 18 GHz

• Normal Incidence Return Loss: < -45 dB over 1 – 10 GHz and < -50 dB over 10 – 18

GHz

• Fire Standard: ISO 11925-2 class E / DIN 4102 class B2 (or equivalent such as NRL 1, 2, 3)

• Rigidity: The absorber tapers must not "droop" or lose shape over time

3. Delivery and Installation:

3.1 Delivery: Within 12 weeks of contract award. Deliver to The Air Force Institute of Technology, building B168, K Street, Area B, Wright-Patterson AFB, OH, 45433.

3.2 Installation: The contractor’s quote must also provide for removal and disposal of the existing absorber. In addition, the contractor will be required to install the new absorber on the walls of AFIT’s chamber located at Wright-Patterson AFB, OH.
