1.0. Scale Models Technical Specifications
The requirement for scale models is in support of the National Museum of the United States Air
Force exhibit program. They are intended to be highly accurate and detailed scale replicas of the actual vehicles. The accuracy of scale, fidelity of surface finishes, colors, markings, and insignia
(CMI), and their scale accuracy are critical.
1.1. Shuttle Atlantis Model, Overall Characteristics. To fully interpret the development and history of the Space Shuttle, the NMUSAF has a requirement for a 1/20 scale model of the Space
Shuttle orbiter Atlantis. The model shall be accurate in structure, detail, colors, markings and insignia to replicate the Space Shuttle orbiter Atlantis. Noticeable exterior details shall be replicated. If any components are fabricated from wood, no wood grain shall show through the paint finish. No seams shall be noticeable, paint shall be smooth and replicate appearance of the actual finishes on the Atlantis and the markings shall be clear and sharp. Surface textures and details shall replicate the surface finishes and details of the actual Atlantis. The model must reproduce in scale all structural and painting details of the actual orbiter, be of durable construction suitable for long-term display in a museum environment, be identical in appearance to the actual Atlantis orbiter, and must be easily disassembled and reassembled in order to allow for relocating the display.
1.1.1. The orbiter model shall represent the Atlantis in orbit, i.e., with payload doors open and landing gear retracted. The payload bay shall contain a scale model of a Defense
Support Program (DSP) satellite in stowed launch configuration, and show the structural details of the actual orbiter payload bay and payload doors in structural configuration and appearance. The model shall be displayed with the payload bay facing up and the shuttle horizontal, banked to the left 40 degrees from level and supported by clear acrylic rods sized to provide appropriate support. The model must also incorporate a Canadarm robotic arm in the deployed position. The Canadarm must be positionable and be able to stay in whatever deployed position NMUSAF staff deem appropriate.
1.2. International Space Station Model, Overall Characteristics. To fully interpret the development and history of the Space Shuttle, the NMUSAF has a requirement for a scale model of the International Space Station (ISS). The ISS model shall be accurate in structure, detail, colors, markings and insignia to replicate the appearance of the ISS as of July 2011. The model is required to replicate the surface finishes and details of the ISS. Noticeable exterior details shall be replicated. If any components are fabricated from wood, no wood grain shall show through the paint finish. No seams shall be noticeable, paint shall be smooth and replicate appearance of the actual finishes on the ISS, and the markings shall be clear and sharp. Surface textures and details shall replicate the surface finishes and details of the actual ISS. A high level of craftsmanship is required. The ISS model shall also have one Shuttle Orbiter, two Soyuz spacecraft, and two Progress supply ships connected in a secure but removable manner at the appropriate locations on the ISS and therefore must be to the exact same scale as the ISS, 1/72 scale. The model may be packaged as separate components to permit safe shipping, and be easily re-attached and mounted in the display case once delivered to the museum.
1.2.1. The ISS model shall be 1/72 scale. Space Shuttle orbiter and a Soyuz spacecraft shall bedocked at the appropriate nodes. The ISS model shall be an accurate representation of the ISS as it appeared in July 2011. The model shall be delivered with a display case made from clear acrylic plastic sized to permit 7 to 8 inches of clearance on all sides. The ISS model shall be supported 7 to 8 inches from the base of the display case by clear acrylic rods, which will be sized to provide adequate support when moving the case to prevent damage to the model.
1.2.2. The base of the display case shall be painted and marked to represent a typical NFL regulation football field in the same scale as the ISS model.
1.3. Explorer I Satellite Model. To fully interpret the story of America’s exploration of space, the NMUSAF requires a full size reproduction of the nation’s first satellite, Explorer I. The full size reproduction shall exhibit all external structural, painting, and markings details of the actual
Explorer I satellite including antennas. If any components are fabricated from wood, no wood grain shall show through the paint finish. No seams shall be noticeable, paint shall be smooth and replicate appearance of the actual finishes on the Explorer I Satellite and the markings shall be clear and sharp. Surface textures and details shall replicate the surface finishes and details of the actual the Explorer I Satellite. The reproduction shall be made of durable materials and constructed to survive long-term display in an indoor climate-controlled museum environment and be delivered with a sturdy and stable metal stand to securely support the satellite vertically in an unobtrusive manner. The stand must be easily removed and reinstalled to allow for ease of relocating the satellite reproduction.
1.4. Launch Vehicle Models, Overall Characteristics. To fully interpret the development and history of USAF launch vehicles in comparison to the Space Shuttle, the NMUSAF has a requirement for 1/32 scale models of significant launch vehicles with the appropriate spacecraft
(capsules) or payload fairings attached. These scale models must duplicate in scale all external structural and painting details of the actual launch vehicles (rockets), be of durable construction for long-term display in an indoor climate-controlled museum environment, be identical in appearance to the actual rockets (including representing the stainless steel structure of the Atlas booster), be delivered with sturdy and stable metal or wooden stands (securely supporting the rockets vertically in an unobtrusive manner), and must be easily disassembled and reassembled in order to allow for moving the rocket models to alternate locations. The models shall be accurate in structure, detail, colors, markings and insignia to replicate Launch Vehicle Models.
Noticeable exterior details shall be replicated. If any components are fabricated from wood, no wood grain shall show through the paint finish. No seams shall be noticeable, paint shall be smooth and replicate appearance of the actual finishes on the Launch Vehicle Models and the markings shall be clear and sharp. Surface textures and details shall replicate the surface finishes and details of the actual Launch Vehicle Models. All models must be the same scale, 1/32. The models required include:
1.4.1. Juno1/Jupiter C (Explorer 1 mission)
1.4.2. Mercury Redstone representing the MR-3 mission
1.4.3. Mercury Atlas representing the MA-6 (#109D) mission
1.4.4. Gemini Titan II representing the Gemini 4 mission
1.4.5. Thor-Agena A representing the Discoverer XIV (Corona) flight
1.4.6. Titan IIID (Hexagon KH-9 missions)
1.4.7. Atlas Centaur SLV-3D configuration (Pioneer missions)
1.4.8. Saturn IB representing the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project flight
1.4.9. Saturn V representing the Apollo 15 mission
1.4.10. Delta II (7925 version)
1.4.11. Titan 4B (with 86-foot payload shroud)
1.4.12. Atlas V representing the USA-226 mission (X-37B OTV-2)
1.4.13. Delta IV Heavy – representing the NROL-32 or NROL-49 mission
1.4.14. Space Shuttle Full Stack (with External Tank and Solid Rocket Boosters in a launch configuration) representing Shuttle Orbiter Atlantis
