About this file
This is a vendor Questions and Answers document for federal solicitation FA8227-26-R-3647 dated February 12, 2026, addressing specifications for a 5-Axis CNC Mill/Lathe.
The solicitation requires one multitasking lathe with three spindles: a main lathe spindle with a minimum 7-inch bore diameter, a secondary lathe spindle with a minimum 5-inch bore diameter (replacing a traditional tailstock), and a milling spindle. Both turning spindles feature hollow bores designed to pull parts into the spindle tube—the main spindle will accommodate 7-inch outside diameter pipe, while the secondary spindle will hold specialty parts. All spindles require a minimum motor power of 30 horsepower, though the turning spindles are expected to require higher horsepower than the milling spindle. The machine must accommodate bar stock loaded through the spindle and discharged from the machine side, with material types varying by job. The main lathe spindle requires a 13-inch outer diameter chuck or greater, as does the secondary lathe spindle. Additional requirements include an automatic steady rest with manual or programmable adjustable pressure settings, though measuring capability to monitor clamped diameter is not necessary. The machining capability must support a minimum diameter of 27 inches or greater and a length of 120 inches or greater.

Solicitation Vendor Questions 5-Axis CNC Mill/Lathe
FA8227-26-R-3647
2/12/2026
1. Section 3.1.2 calls out a “main lathe” and “second lathe”.
a. Is this clause intending a “main spindle” and “counter spindle” in one (1) multifunction machine, or is it intending to have two (2) separate lathes?
Answer: One multifunction machine with two spindles. A main spindle and a secondary spindle instead of a tailstock.
2. Section 3.1.2.a calls out a spindle size with a minimum bore diameter of 7”.
a. Is this bore diameter through the entire spindle body – in other words, a hollow spindle?
Answer: Yes
b. Does this indicate the intent to pull a part into the spindle tube?
Answer: Yes, we have a part made from 7” OD pipe that will need to be held inside the spindle tube.
3. Section 3.1.2.b calls out a spindle size with a minimum bore diameter of 5”.
a. Is this bore diameter through the entire spindle body – in other words, a hollow spindle?
Answer: Yes
b. Does this indicate the intent to pull a part into the spindle tube?
Answer: Yes, we have some specialty parts that will need to be held inside the spindle tube on the second head.
4. Section 3.1.3 calls out a motor power of 30HP.
a. This is the same power as both turning spindles. Is the intent to have a milling spindle with the same power as the turning spindles?
Answer: The intent is to show a minimum power requirement for all the spindles, to avoid a motor being purchased that’s too weak. It is reasonable to assume the turning spindles will require a motor with higher horsepower than the milling spindle. Any motor with 30 HP or greater will satisfy the requirement.
5. Section 3.1.4 calls out bar work.
a. What sort of bar material will be used? Will this bar be fed into the machine via a bar feeder or other device?
Answer: This machine will not have a bar feeder but may have bar stock loaded through the spindle and out the side of the machine. The material will vary per job, as our shop works through individual, temporary jobs.
6. Section 3.1.5 calls out an automatic steady rest.
a. Should the steady rest have measuring capability to monitor the clamped diameter?
Answer: Not necessary for our purposes.
b. Should the steady rest have adjustable pressure settings?
i. If so, manual or programmable?
Answer: Yes, manual or programmable is acceptable.
7. Is this for one or two CNC Multitasking lathes?
Answer: One multitasking lathe with two separate turning spindles, and a milling spindle.
a. If this is for two lathes are they requesting a second spindle or a tailstock?
8. Also, should 3.1.2 item a state Main Spindle and b state Second spindle?
Answer: Yes, main lathe spindle and second lathe spindle.
