About this file
This is a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for a thermal battery manufactured by Rafael Ordnance Systems Division in Haifa, Israel. The product contains multiple hazardous ingredients including asbestos (0.0025%), lithium (0.2%), potassium perchlorate, barium chromate, zirconium, and various salts and metals. The thermal battery reaches temperatures of 660°F (350°C) within 5 to 20 minutes upon activation and poses burn hazards upon contact with skin. In worst-case scenarios involving hermetic seal damage, the battery may emit toxic gases including hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide through safety vents.
Critical safety protocols include storing the battery in unit packaging containers at temperatures between -70°C and 100°C, using Class D META-L-X fire extinguishers only (never water), and allowing approximately 4 hours for cooling after activation before removal. Personnel handling activated batteries must use safety chambers, maintain safe distances, wear appropriate personal protective equipment including glass cloth gloves and eye protection, and employ open respiration systems or ABC masks in case of accidental release. The product is classified as U.N. 3178, packing group II, class 4.1 flammable solids, and must be transported in inner soft packaging with each battery packed separately. Disposal options include detoxification, hazardous landfill placement, or ocean dumping beyond 50 miles at depths exceeding 600 fathoms. The MSDS was prepared on March 29, 2005, and approved by Rafael's Material & Processes Department.

3. HAZARD IDENTIFICATION
Thermal: On activation, the case of the thermal battery can reach a temperature of 660°F (350°C) within 5 to 20 minutes.
Bursting: The worst case associated with thermal battery would be when the hermetic seal of the battery is damaged and gases are emitted (H2S and SO2). The venting will occur through the glass beads that serve as safety vents.
Hazard: The Thermal Battery is not harmful as long as it is not activated nor opened.
When activated the Thermal Battery can cause burns if it is in contact with skin.
The inner components are hazardous.
R 34 - Can cause burns.
S 37 - Use protective gloves.
Activation: Avoid short-circuiting, charging or applying loads out of the battery specification.
Protective shield (5 mm glass / 2 mm poly-carbonate) is recommended for laboratory experiments.
4. FIRST-AID MEASURES
In the case of
Inhaling Remove to fresh air. Refer to medical attention
Skin damage Rinse with plenty of water. Refer to medical attention.
Eye damage Rinse with plenty of water. Refer to medical attention.
5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
In the event of a fire, it must be extinguished in the vicinity of the battery by using a yellow, Class D META-L-X type extinguisher.
Do not use water or any other fire extinguishing devices.
After activation the battery must be allowed to cool down for approx. 4 hours. and then removed from its place.
6. SPILLAGE, ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
In the event of an accident, bursting or gas leak, clear the area immediately and acoid breathing the developed toxic gases. If you must enter the work area, use an open respiration system or an ABC mask.
Keep the battery contents away from water and place in sealed metal container.
A sudden increase in the case temperature is cause for alarm. If the case temperature exceeds 660°F (350°C) at any time, SEC. CLASS.: U.C
BUSINESS CLASS: U.C

cease testing and clear the area. In the case of a breakup in voltage clear the area immediately. This may indicate of a cell shorting.
7. HANDLING AND STORAGE
Handling/storage temperature range: Avoid conditioning/heating/cooling at temperatures higher than 100°C or lower than -
70°C. Until usage store in unit packaging containers.
8. EXPOSURE CONTROL AND PERSONAL PROTECTION
Ventilation Control: Use with adequate ventilation.
Respiratory Protection: Special respiratory protection is not generally needed.
Eye Protection: Eye Protection is needed.
Hand Protection: Use glass cloth gloves to protect hands from heat.
Body Protection: Use body protection appropriate for task (apron or suit) When activating the battery use safety chambers capable of protecting test personnel from products of a rupture or a vent.
Test personnel should be at a safe distance from the chamber.
