About this file

This is a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for nitrogen dioxide gas products. The document is prepared by Linde Gas LLC and provides comprehensive hazard and safety information for the chemical compound nitrogen dioxide (NO2), also known as nitrogen tetroxide (N2O4) and dinitrogen tetroxide.

The product is classified as a Division 2.3 toxic gas with DOT identification number UN 1067 and RQ 10(4.54). Nitrogen dioxide has a boiling point of 70°F (21.1°C), vapor pressure of 14.8 psia at 70°F, and specific gravity of 2.83 relative to air. The chemical appears as a yellow-brown liquid to reddish-brown gas with an acid suffocating odor. Health hazard exposure limits are set at 3 Molar PPM (Time Weighted Average) and 5 Molar PPM (STEL) per ACGIH 1997, with an OSHA 1995 ceiling limit of 5 Molar PPM. The vapor is highly toxic and causes delayed chemical pneumonitis and pulmonary edema, with severe symptoms potentially delayed 5 to 7 hours. Nitrogen dioxide is extremely reactive and a strong oxidizing agent that explodes on contact with alcohols, hydrocarbons, organic materials, and fuels. It is stable at normal temperatures but becomes unstable above 320°F (160°C). The recommended extinguishing medium is water spray or fog. Emergency first aid requires immediate medical attention, respiratory protection via positive pressure air line with mask or self-contained breathing apparatus, and 72+ hours of medical observation to prevent delayed pulmonary edema. Waste disposal requires returning unused quantities in properly labeled shipping containers to the supplier. Special handling includes using well-ventilated areas, maintaining valve protection caps, using hand trucks for cylinder movement, and transporting cylinders only in open flatbed or pick-up vehicles, never in enclosed compartments.

Vapors are a strong irritant to the pulmonary tract. Contact with liquid causes a severe corrosive action on the skin or eyes. Initial symptoms of inhalation may be moderate and include irritation of the eyes and throat, tightness of the chest, headache, nausea and gradual loss of strength. Severe symptoms may be delayed (possibly for 5 to 7 hours) and include cyanosis, increased difficulty in breathing, irregular respiration, lassitude and possible eventual death due to pulmonary edema in untreated cases.

The vapor is highly toxic and hazardous because of its ability to cause delayed chemical pneumonitis and pulmonary edema. Chronic or repeated exposure may cause permanent decrements in pulmonary function (silo filler’s disease).

The absence of marked acute irritation of nitrogen dioxide limits its warning properties. Contact with the liquid causes a corrosive or chemical etching action on the skin or eyes.

Neither nitrogen dioxide or nitrogen tetroxide are listed in the IARC, NTP or by OSHA as a carcinogen or potential carcinogen

PROMPT MEDICAL ATTENTION IS MANDATORY IN ALL CASES OF OVEREXPOSURE TO NITROGEN DIOXIDE.

RESCUE PERSONNEL SHOULD BE EQUIPPED WITH SELF-CONTAINED BREATHING APPARATUS AND WEAR

PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND BOOTS IF THE LIQUID HAS SPILLED OR IS BEING DISCHARGED.

Inhalation: Conscious persons should be carried (not assisted) to an uncontaminated area and breathe fresh air supplemented with oxygen. Keep the patient warm, quiet and under competent medical observation until the danger of delayed pulmonary edema has passed (at least 72 hours). Any physical exertion during this period should be discouraged as it may increase the severity of the pulmonary edema or chemical pneumonitis. Bed rest is indicated.

Unconscious persons should be moved to an uncontaminated area, (Continued on Page 4)

Nitrogen dioxide is extremely reactive and is a strong oxidizing agent. It explodes on contact with alcohols, hydrocarbons, organic materials and fuels. Nitrogen dioxide decomposes on contact with water to produce nitric and nitrous acids. It acts as a catalyst for the explosive reaction of oxyqen and hydrogen.

Evacuate all personnel from affected area. Use appropriate protective equipment. If leak is in user’s equipment, be certain to purge piping with an inert gas prior to attempting repairs. If leak is in container or container valve, contact your closest supplier location or call the emergency telephone number listed herein.

Do not attempt to dispose of waste or unused quantities. Return in the shipping container properly labeled, with any valve outlet plugs or caps secured and valve protection cap in place to your supplier. For emergency disposal assistance, contact your closest supplier location or call the emergency telephone number listed herein.

Use only in well-ventilated areas. Valve protection caps and valve outlet threaded plugs must remain in place unless container is secured with valve outlet piped to use point. Do not drag, slide or roll cylinders. Use a suitable hand truck for cylinder movement. Do not heat cylinder by any means to increase the discharge rate of product from the cylinder.

Use a check valve or trap in the discharge line to prevent hazardou back flow into the cylinder.

For additional handling recommendations, consult Compressed Gas Association’s Pamphlet P-1.

Protect cylinders from physical damage. Store in cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from heavily trafficked areas and emergency exits. Do not allow the temperature where cylinders are stored to exceed 125ºF (52ºC). Cylinders should be stored upright and firmly secured to prevent falling or being knocked over. Full and empty cylinders should be segregated. Use a “first in - first out” inventory system to prevent full cylinders being stored for excessive periods of time.

For additional storage recommendations, consult Compressed Gas Association’s Pamphlet P-1.

Anhydrous nitrogen dioxide is noncorrosive to most metals at normal temperatures. It does corrode copper and its alloys. Teflon® is the preferred gasket material.

OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS OR PRECAUTIONS

Keep equipment scrupulously dry. Compressed gas cylinders should not be refilled except by qualified producers of compressed gases. Shipment of a compressed gas cylinder which has not been filled by the owner or with his (written) consent is a violation of Federal Law (49CFR).

HEALTH HAZARD DATA

TOXICOLOGICAL PROPERTIES: (Continued)

Persons in ill health where such illness would be aggravated by exposure to nitrogen dioxide should not be allowed to work with or handle this product.

RECOMMENDED FIRST AID TREATMENT: (Continued) given assisted respiration and supplemental oxygen. Once respiration has been restored, they should be treated as above.

Eye Contact: PERSONS WITH POTENTIAL EXPOSURE TO NITROGEN DIOXIDE SHOULD NOT WEAR

CONTACT LENSES.

Flush contaminated eye(s) with copious quantities of water. Part eyelids to assure complete flushing. Continue for a minimum of 15 minutes.

Skin Contact: Flush affected area with copious quantities of water. Remove affected clothing as rapidly as possible.

Subsequently treat as for a thermal burn.

FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD DATA

SPECIAL FIRE FIGHTING PROCEDURES: (Continued)

Continued application of large quantities of water will eventually dilute the oxidizers so that combustion is no longer supported. The remaining airsupported fire may be extinguished by the appropriate method.

SPECIAL PRECAUTONS

OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS OR PRECAUTIONS: (Continued)

Always secure cylinders in an upright position before transporting them. NEVER transport cylinders in trunks of vehicles, enclosed vans, truck cabs or in passenger compartments. Transport cylinders secured in open flatbed or in open pick-up type vehicles.

Reporting under SARA, Title IIr, Section 313 not required.
