About this file

This document is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) file addressing contractor inquiries regarding specimen preparation and testing requirements for additively manufactured CoCr LCF (Low Cycle Fatigue) samples.

The document addresses five key inquiries: (1) dimensional inspection reporting requirements, to which the government responded that a typical dimensional inspection report is acceptable as long as it conforms to drawing requirements, with the option to provide sample reports rather than individual reports for each coupon; (2) specimen delivery schedule and stacking configuration, clarifying that samples will be sent in batches of approximately 2 builds (72 coupons), with half stacked and half individual, spaced approximately 0.150" apart and separated using EDM; (3) machining capabilities for threaded sections, with the government denying a waiver request for single-point turning on threads and instead requiring low-stress grinding, though indicating possible reconsideration if insufficient vendors are available; (4) thread gauge size deviation, where the government approved using ½-20 UNC threads instead of the specified ½-13 UNC threads to accommodate contractor testing stands; and (5) test parameters, with the government confirming runout is set at 2 million cycles without providing specific run-time estimates. The fatigue samples must be machined per IAW 1.2.3 specifications and tested to ASTM E606 and E466 standards at room temperature with starting frequency of 0.5Hz, increasable to 9Hz after 24 hours, using customer-specified strain rates.

Text version

Answer: We foresee sending samples in batches, approximately 2 builds (72 coupons) at a time. Half are in stacks, half are individual. We will do a couple prints, send them through heat treat and ship them to the vendor to be processed and tested.

The bars are around .150” from each other. We typically use EDM to separate the bars.

3) We have the capability to perform Low Stress Grinding on the gauge sections but not in the threads. We will need a waiver to do single point turning on threaded section.

Answer: Low stress grind is required for the threads. We cannot provide a waiver at this time. However, we could reevaluate this requirement if there aren’t suƯicient vendors available who can grind threads.

4) Fatigue specimen with required thread gage ½-13 is too coarse so we recommend ½-20 which is finer and will perform better. Need waiver

Answer: ½-20 is fine. They can deviate on thread size as needed to fit their testing stands.

5) Do you have estimated run-time or run-out so that we can estimate lead-time

Answer: I don’t have run times. However, runout is at 2M cycles.
