FOREWORD

This checklist provides instructions for aircraft wash-ing. These instructions do not replace detailed instruc-tions in TO 1C-130A-23, and TO 1-1-691, but are to be used as a guide while performing the work to ensure that no item is overlooked.

It is expected that mechanics using this checklist will not need detailed instruction for performing routine maintenance operations. However, less experienced personnel may find it helpful to make occasional refer-ence to the maintenance manual.

The table of contents preceding these instructions enables quick access to the required procedure.

iii/(iv blank)

SAFETY SUMMARY

The supervisor will ensure that personnel are familiar with AFOSH 91-100, AFOSH 91-501, TO 1C-130A-23 and TO 1-1-691. Supervisor will brief all personnel of personal injury hazards as follows:

WARNING

. Avoid breathing toxic fumes.

. Avoid skin contact with compounds.

. Avoid climbing on wet surfaces by us-ing long handled brushes and mainte-nance stands. When it is absolutely necessary to walk on aircraft wing dur-ing washing, an approved fall restraint system will be used and extreme care will be exercised.

. Guard rails must be used properly on stands.

. In the event of chemical injury, seek medical aid immediately.

. In the event of cleaner being splashed in eyes, rinse thoroughly with fresh water for 15 minutes, seek medical at-tention.

. Remove clothing saturated with clean-ing solution immediately and flush ex-posed skin areas with fresh water.

Change 9 v

SAFETY SUMMARY - Continued

. While washing and cleaning the aircraft, person-nel will wear eye protection, rubber gloves, and clothing, as required by TO 1-1-691. However, when high temperatures are experienced outside, personnel will take an occasional break from washing activities to preclude the possibility of heat prostration.

. Solvents will not be mixed with the cleaning com-pound solution.

. Compressed air used for cleaning can create air-borne particles that may enter the eyes. Pres-sure will not exceed 30 PSI. Eye protection is required.

. The anti-ref lective coating on the infrared win-dow for the AAQ-17 infrared receiver contains slightly radioactive thorium f luoride. The only potential hazard involves ingestion of this coating material. Do not grind, sand, f ile, scrub, or di-rect high pressure liquid at the coated infrared window. Avoid prolonged skin contact with chips or power residue from broken or damaged win-dow assembly.

. Cleaning compounds MIL-PRF-87937 and MIL- PRF-85570 are toxic to skin, eyes and respiratory tract. Avoid skin and eye contact. Good general ventilation is normally adequate.

vi

SAFETY SUMMARY - Continued

. Amlguard, MIL-C-85054, Type I is f lammable and toxic to eyes, skin and respiratory tract.

Avoid skin and eye contact. Good general venti-lation is normally adequate. Keep away from open f lames or other sources of ignition.

2-3

8. SOIL BARRIER APPLICATION:

After each airplane washing, soil barrier may be applied to flap wells, exhaust paths, urinal path and landing gear wheel wells at users option. (See TO 1-1-691).

When applying soil barrier coating, care should be used to avoid spraying moving parts such as landing gear struts, bearings, flap jackscrew and tracks, Plexiglas/ windows or electrical contact faying surfaces. Inadvertent light spray on these areas should cause no problems.

2-1.2. LOCAL INTERIOR CLEANING.

Interior areas of the airplane subject to the accumula-tion of dirt, debris, and airplane fluids residue should be cleaned as required for the prevention of corrosion as well as to afford the detection of a breakdown in the the corrosion protection finishes originally applied.

a. Engine dry bays become soiled from carbon residues. Prior to each ISO inspection, thoroughly clean interior of all dry bays aft of the engines by wiping with clean rags and cleaner MIL-PRF-87937, Type I, followed by wiping with clean dry rag. Then hand wash the dry bay interior using clean rags or sponges and cleaning compound MIL-PRF-87937, Type II as directed by TO 1-1-691. Do not use a large volume of water. Dry the area by wiping with clean dry rags. Ensure that all cleaning solution is removed and no residue remains. Apply a light coat of amlguard, MIL-C-85054, Type I, to areas where the coating system is cracked, missing or damaged.

Scrub the f looring on the f light deck, cargo deck, and ramp with a mop dampened with a 5 to 1 solution of water and cleaner MIL-PRF-87937, Type I.

Clean the mop frequently. Use a stiff bristle brush to remove stubborn stains.

Do not use high volumes of water inside the airplane. Ensure the f loor, including all tie down receptacles, is thoroughly dry.

c. High pressure, low volume, water spray equipment may be used for cleaning heavily soiled f loorboards, subject to the restrictions below:

(1) Pressure is limited to approximately

500 PSI.

(2) Water temperature is limited to 120oF.

(3) Water volume shall be limited to approximately 2 gallons/minute.
