Nose Bleed Emergency Action Plan

Lifeguard is alerted

1st Responder- Pinch the nostrils together without releasing the pressure for 10 minutes. Have 2nd responder or bystander keep track of the time and retrieve ice pack from the main office.

1st responder constantly reassess the victims condition and decide whether or not 911 needs to be called. If at anytime during treatment the victim loses consciousness, have reliable bystander call 911. Stay with victim until emergency services arrives.

3 whistle blasts to clear pool.

As soon as is possible notify the Aquatics Director or the Outdoor Rec Director of the situation

911 caller meet Emergency Services at the front of the building to inform them of the situation

Fill out Incident Reports and turn in to Head Lifeguard

Staff debriefing and follow up counseling, if necessary

Have the victim sit down and lean forward

1st Responder- Apply ice pack to the bridge of nose and put pressure on the upper lip just beneath the nostril area.

2nd Responder- begin the blood borne pathogen clean up checklist. As soon as is possible and safe to do so, reopen pool for other patrons.
